Two red ochre paintings from the Stone Age and a 65-kilometre mountain biking trail network show the range of activities available in Kuhmoinen. There are also activities on the lakes and sites with archaeological, landscape and local industrial history. When planning your trip, you can choose different priorities: cycling a section of a trail, paddling or spending time at individual cultural sites.

Trails, Lakes and Cross-Country Skiing

The mountain biking trail network covers 65 kilometres and includes easy, challenging and very challenging sections. You can choose shorter sections or ride the entire network. This lets you consider your choice of route and preferred difficulty level as two specific aspects of your planning.

Boating, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are possible at many locations in Kuhmoinen. Kayaks and SUP boards can be rented from several businesses; rental options may vary by season. If you are planning to rent equipment, it is a good idea to check availability for your preferred dates with the providers.

Cross-country skiing is another option: the municipality maintains around ten trails ranging from 0.5 to 10 kilometres long. This range offers a clear choice between shorter and longer routes, which you can fit around your schedule.

Landscape and Archaeological Traces

Part of Tehinselkä, the widest open-water area of Lake Päijänne, lies within Kuhmoinen’s waters. Linnavuori is an ancient defensive fort; its rocky summit rises 40 metres above the surrounding area. The two sites offer contrasting landscapes: an open expanse of water and a rocky summit.

Päijälä Hillfort was designated a nationally valuable landscape area in 2021 and is one of Finland’s 186 such areas. At the foot of the hillfort, there is a paved car park with an information board, also in English; a newer information board is located at the summit. Two red ochre paintings dating from the Stone Age are still visible at Pyhänpää, near Lästilä.

Industrial History and Local Attractions

The industrial complex of Kuhmoisten Saha was built on the shore of Lake Päijänne between 1912 and 1985. Despite changes in use and renovation, it has remained relatively unified and intact. The period in which the complex was built clearly sets it apart in time from the Stone Age rock paintings at Pyhänpää.

Kuhmoinen Local History Museum is housed in a three-storey building and displays an extensive collection of agricultural objects. Agriculture is the focus here, while the Kuhmoisten Saha complex tells the story of industrial history.

The children’s art trail in Central Park was created especially for children, with artist Eino Viikilä contributing to its design. Another way to spend time together or alone is the versatile 18-hole disc golf course near the school centre. People of all ages and skill levels can play the sport there, either alone or in a group. By contrast, the art trail is specifically aimed at children, while disc golf accommodates different ages and skill levels.

Kuhmoinen Public Library also serves as the tourist information office. It is located at Toritie 42; the listed phone number is +358 40 359 4543.
