Klaksvík combines glimpses into earlier worlds of trade and everyday life with wool craft, local history and outdoor activities. The range of themes gives you several ways to plan your trip: you can explore exhibitions, choose a guided experience or set aside time for trails and activities on the water.

Cultural History and Wool Craft

Norðoya Fornminnasavn is located in an old shop in a historic district of Klaksvík. Its exhibitions explore everyday life in the Faroe Islands in earlier times. The historic trading buildings that house the museum once formed a regional centre for trade, fishing and export. At this museum, everyday history and the region’s former economic importance come together.

The museum also includes “The Old Pharmacy”, one of the few surviving pharmacies in the Kingdom of Denmark. Its original fittings are still in place. Another exhibition, “The Herring Era”, explores the importance of fishing and salted herring exports in the history of the Faroe Islands. Those particularly interested in trade and fishing will find a specific historical focus here; the exhibition on everyday life in earlier times offers a broader view of life in the past.

Spinnaríið, also known as “The House of Faroese Wool”, focuses on wool processing. Visitors can try traditional tools and learn simple spinning and carding techniques. This makes it different from a conventional exhibition: the focus here is on materials and hands-on skills. Spinnaríið is a cultural attraction in Klaksvík.

Gallarí Á Stongunum also combines culture with a historic setting: the building is part of Klaksvík’s cultural and commercial history. The gallery displays artworks in temporary exhibitions and has no fixed opening hours. Check the current exhibition arrangements before visiting. A visit here depends more on the exhibition programme than it would at a venue with fixed opening hours.

Local History with a Guided Walk or Audio Tour

A guided walking tour explores the life and legacy of Nólsoyar Páll, regarded as a national hero and pioneer. The tour also visits Biskupstøðgarðurin, Nólsoyar Páll’s historic home, which is preserved as a historic setting. If you are interested in a particular person and a specific place connected to their story, this walk offers a different focus from the broader themes of the museum exhibitions.

“Understanding Klaksvík” offers a flexible, self-guided way to explore the town at your own pace. The main difference between the two formats is how you get to know Klaksvík: the guided tour focuses on a historical subject and visits a named home; the audio tour gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Both complement the exhibitions with a perspective on the town itself.

Klakkur, Úti í Grøv and the Sea

The walking trail up Klakkur is accessible year-round, although trail conditions can vary. The route starts at the car park below the church in the centre of Klaksvík. In winter, locals occasionally ski in the area around Klakkur. Hiking and this occasional winter activity offer different seasonal options, but skiing should not be understood as a regular offering.

Úti í Grøv is the only wooded area in Klaksvík. The Faroe Islands’ first swimming pool was built nearby between 1905 and 1906. This historic connection offers another perspective on the town’s development. It is separate from today’s walking trail up Klakkur: the information about the swimming pool concerns its construction history, not a current swimming facility.

Dragin is a historic sailing ship based in Klaksvík. In summer, it takes visitors from the harbour on sailing trips along the coast of the Northern Islands. On board, visitors can help hoist the sails or steer the ship. The trips are seasonal, and schedules and availability may vary; check the current tour offerings before your trip.

When to Visit and Local Cuisine

Norðoyastevna takes place in Klaksvík on the first weekend of June and marks the start of the summer season in the Faroe Islands. Dates can vary from year to year, so check the dates for your intended travel year. Along with Dragin’s summer sailing trips, the festival offers a seasonal point of interest. The walking trail up Klakkur, by contrast, is accessible year-round, although conditions can vary.

A guided food tour of Klaksvík visits selected local venues. There, visitors can sample sweet and savoury specialities made with fresh local ingredients. If you would like to include local cuisine in your trip alongside museums and trails, this is a separate option; tour availability may vary. You can choose what to focus on according to your interests and travel dates, while distinguishing seasonal offerings from trails that are accessible year-round.
