Vastseliina combines castle and pilgrimage history with a hiking route in the Piusa River Valley and local events. The answers cover different highlights, without requiring you to turn them into a fixed itinerary.

Castle and Pilgrimage History

The Püha Risti Chapel at Vastseliina Episcopal Castle became the most popular pilgrimage destination in all of Livonia in the surrounding area. The Vastseliina Medieval Experience Centre presents exhibitions on the history of the castle, knightly chain mail, Hanseatic merchants’ trade and alchemy. Palverännumaja offers a different focus with an interactive exhibition about medieval pilgrims and pilgrimages. This lets you explore the history of the castle and trade, on the one hand, and the history of pilgrimage, on the other, as different ways of approaching the Middle Ages.

A pilgrimage route through Estonia runs from the monastery and church in Pirita to the medieval sanctuary at Vastseliina Episcopal Castle. It places the history of pilgrimage within a wider route, with a clearly identified starting point and destination. The castle kitchen also draws on the past: it prepares dishes with a medieval character, inspired by historic recipes and banquet traditions.

Hiking in the Piusa River Valley

Near Vastseliina, a 15 km hiking trail starts at the ruins of the Episcopal Castle. It follows the ancient valley of the Piusa to the village of Lindora on the Võru–Obinitsa road and lies within the Piusa River Valley Landscape Protection Area. Its two endpoints make it a route between the castle and the village, rather than a short walk around the castle.

There is also a disc golf course with twelve baskets at Vastseliina GĂĽmnaasium, measuring just over one kilometre. This gives you a choice of two activities with markedly different route lengths: a disc golf course of just over one kilometre and the 15 km trail in the Piusa River Valley. The distances provide a concrete comparison without making any claims about the difficulty of the activities.

Fair and Music Event

The Vastseliina Maarahva Laat is a traditional two-day fair that brings together traders, supporters of rural life, cultural groups and visitors. It celebrates local crafts and food culture. As dates and programmes may change, check the latest event details if the fair is the reason for your trip.

Õhtulaulud has also been held in Vastseliina for the tenth time; the event took place at the community centre. Check current dates before your trip to find out whether and when further editions will take place. This lets you plan a stay tied to an event around its date.

Find a Hotel Based on Your Reason for Travelling

When looking for hotels in Vastseliina, it is worth deciding on your preferred focus first: castle and pilgrimage history, a longer hike or a specific event date. If a festival determines your travel dates, check its date before booking.
