A protected plant habitat, a post station dating from 1728 and leisure activities in the surrounding region give Tõlliste a range of things to explore on a trip. Nature, history and activities are found at different geographic levels: some of the places described are in the village, while other activities are in the surrounding region.

Protected landscapes in Tõlliste and Sooru

In the village of Tõlliste, in Valga vald municipality, lies the legally designated Tõlliste püsiksannika püsielupaik protected area. It protects populations of Püsiksannikas (Swertia perennis), a species in protection category I. The connection to nature is specific: the protected area is associated with a named plant species.

Another protected feature in the village is the 270-metre-long avenue Tõlliste vanadekodu puiestee. Nearby Sooru is also home to a protected oak grove and a protected manor park. The landscape features therefore range from the protection of a plant habitat to an avenue, wooded areas and parkland.

Historic routes and postal history

The Tõlliste post station (Tõlliste postijaam) stood on the Tartu–Saint Petersburg–Riga post road and was built in 1728. It provides a clearly dated point of reference for the history of transport in the area. The historic Vana Tartu-Valga maantee road is different: it is a cultural heritage object, and 50 to 90 percent of the road or its original function has been preserved. The post station is defined by its year of construction, while the road is notable for the preserved share of its fabric or function.

Traces of cultural heritage in varying states of preservation

In the area around Tõlliste küla, traces of the Tõlliste vallamaja remain in the landscape; the type of cultural heritage object cannot be determined with certainty. The recorded sacred sites are also in different states of preservation. Assaku t. ohvrikivi is a traditional sacrificial stone in Tõlliste village. According to local tradition, part of the stone was blasted away; only a pile of stones may remain.

The recorded sacred site Kajaja ohvritamm ja lohk is also in the village; the associated oak is considered destroyed. Püha Hansu allikas is attributed to Tõlliste based on maps and local tradition, but its precise location remains unclear. This distinction matters when interpreting the evidence: some references concern traces still visible in the landscape, others a tradition or a place whose precise location is unknown.

Activities in the surrounding region

At the Jaanikese Moto and Leisure Center in the region around Tõlliste, the enduro track comprises two sections with superenduro elements. The center also has an AA-class disc golf course. The “Beaver trail” is a route for running, cycling and hiking. This brings together a motorized track, disc golf and three different ways to use a trail.

The facilities also include a water basin in the valley, where visitors can swim and relax. The leisure options therefore vary considerably by activity: walking, disc golf and enduro sit alongside an opportunity to unwind by the water. When planning your trip, you can consider which of these activities matters most to you.
