Alatskivi Castle has stood in the heart of Alatskivi since 1885. The visitor centre, museum and exhibitions explore different aspects of the castle and manor’s history. There are also guided activities, outdoor trails and a nature conservation area—an assortment that gives you different options when planning your visit.
Castle rooms with a range of themes
The visitor centre on the first floor of Alatskivi Castle presents the castle as a family residence and covers the history of the manor and the castle’s restoration. The second floor houses the Eduard Tubin Museum, dedicated to Eduard Tubin. In the basement, a photo exhibition features manors in the historic Old Tartu County.
The themes thus span family and manor history, restoration, the museum and historic manors. If you would rather explore these topics on a guided tour, the tour of Alatskivi Castle and the Eduard Tubin Museum takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Advance booking is required. Check the current booking conditions before planning your visit.
Tours of the stable and the town
The riding stable at Alatskivi Manor is now an exhibition stable. A tour of the stable building takes about 45 minutes; advance booking is also required. This makes it easy to distinguish this activity from the tour of the castle and museum in terms of time.
The guided tour “In the Footsteps of the Barons” takes almost four hours. It starts at Alatskivi Castle and also goes through the castle park and to other places in Alatskivi. The tour therefore extends beyond a single building. As booking details may change, check the latest information before planning your visit.
Walking trail, park and nature conservation
The Alatskivi walking trail is 4.5 km long and runs around Lake Alatskivi. The starting point is in the village of Alatskivi, next to the Kalmistu bus stop and the information board by the birch avenue. The trail’s length and starting point give you a clear sense of its layout without assuming a walking time.
The park at Alatskivi Castle covers almost 130 hectares. It also has a 10-basket disc golf course, which is maintained seasonally. The Alatskivi Nature Conservation Area was established in 1964 to protect Alatskivi Park, its ancient valley and the traditional cultural landscapes in the surrounding area. It covers a total of 383.3 hectares.
Manor history and a cultural monument
The manor’s history can also be understood through its buildings and properties: in the 19th century, Alatskivi Manor had 57, of which 41 still remain. Alatskivi Church is also recognised as a cultural monument, a status it has held since 16 September 1997.
Tasting and clay workshop
At a tasting of handmade wines from Alatskivi, participants play a guessing game to identify the wines’ ingredients. The tasting includes a brief overview of winemaking. Advance booking is required. On request, you can also learn more about the historic Deer Garden wine cellar and its connection to the former manor; confirm this part when booking.
You can book a clay workshop at the ceramics studio in Alatskivi Castle; advance booking is recommended. Ask about the workshop’s availability before travelling. The wine tasting and ceramics activity offer different experiences: one combines a guessing game with an overview of production, while the other offers a bookable clay workshop.
