Tornimäe offers several ways to explore its history: a Baroque church, public sculptures and traces of a former harbor site. The changing coastal landscape is particularly striking. During the Viking Age, the archaeological site lay on the seashore; today, the sea is about two kilometers away. Buildings and monuments also tell stories of different periods and themes. Visitors can choose to focus on architecture, maritime history or commemorative culture. The themes also differ in character: the church and archaeological landscape point to longer periods, while events at the community center are tied to specific dates.

Church and older settlement landscape

The Tornimäe Neitsi Maria Kaitsmise Church is a Baroque stone-block building with a cruciform floor plan. A large central dome is complemented by four smaller domes at the corners; the bell tower stands to the west. This brings together a clear floor-plan shape and a tiered arrangement of domes. The church stands on a high coastal bluff, near an old settlement site and a harbor site. Its location thus brings together two themes: church architecture and traces of early settlement.

Harbor site and changing coastline

Today, the archaeological site of Tornimäe lies about two kilometers from the sea; during the Viking Age, it was on the coast. The present-day distance and the former coastal location describe two different points in time for the same place and make the changing landscape easy to visualize. The historic harbor site was abandoned around the year 1000. This may have been related to land uplift. The site was suitable for ships to moor, including those traveling from Gotland to the Gulf of Finland. This example places the harbor site in a specific maritime context.

Monuments and sculptures

A monument to those who fell in the Second World War was completed at Tornimäe’s new cemetery in 1984. At its center is a bronze sculpture by Ülo Õun: a naked young woman holds a broken rose in her hands, which are bent upward. In 2024, another bronze sculpture was unveiled next to Tornimäe School, in Juhan Peegel’s home region. It depicts Peegel sitting on a glacial erratic. The works also differ in whom they commemorate: the cemetery monument remembers a group, while the sculpture next to the school depicts Juhan Peegel as an individual.

Events at the community center

The Tornimäe Community Center is located at the intersection of four roads in the heart of the village. It hosts concerts, performances, parties, exhibitions and conferences. Its central location provides a landmark; events offer another reason to plan a visit. If you would like to include a particular type of event in your trip, check the dates in advance. This makes it easy to choose between a stay planned around a fixed cultural event and one shaped by your interest in architecture, coastal landscapes or sculptures.
