Kihelkonna is well suited to a stay where church history in the village and nature or cycling excursions in the surrounding area offer different focuses. Particularly striking is the church’s freestanding campanile: built in 1638, it is the only building of its kind in Estonia and originally also served as a lighthouse. Other highlights include a medieval church with an altar wall dating from 1591, a marked cultural heritage trail and seasonal accommodation in the centre. Architectural history, a nearby trail and longer cycling routes offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Church, Campanile and Monument

St Michael’s Church in Kihelkonna was built in the second half of the 13th century. It contains one of Estonia’s oldest post-Reformation altar walls, dating from 1591. The two dates refer to different historical periods: the medieval church building and an altar wall from the late 16th century.

The freestanding campanile was built in 1638. It is the only building of its kind in Estonia. Its original use as a lighthouse adds another function to its architectural history. The monument to the Estonian War of Independence stands in Kihelkonna cemetery. It was unveiled on 29 September 1934; the monument standing today is an exact replica of the original.

Events and Nature in the Surrounding Area

The Kihelkonna community hall hosts theatre performances, concerts, celebrations and seminars. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the date in advance.

The Viidumäe cultural heritage trail is near Kihelkonna. It is 3.3 kilometres long and marked with blue trail markers. Its stated length gives you a concrete reference point for planning your excursion. A car park by the trail has space for six cars or three minibuses. As capacity and local conditions may change, it is advisable to check before your visit.

Vilsandi National Park is also nearby. About two-thirds of the park consists of an island-studded sea with around 160 islands: the sea is therefore an essential part of its landscape. The RMK visitor centre in the national park provides an overview of the local nature and way of life. The Loona Manor complex is also nearby, within Vilsandi National Park.

Cycling Routes and Different Planning Options

The Kihelkonna–Leisi cycling route is more than 65 kilometres long and can be completed in two days. Compared with the 3.3-kilometre cultural heritage trail, it calls for a much longer itinerary and offers a different focus. EuroVelo cycling routes 10 and 13 also pass through Sääre, Kihelkonna and Võhma. Check current route conditions before setting off on a cycling trip.
