Upa Prohvetikivi offers a cultural and historical perspective on the area, while the Kudjape–Upa health trails provide a different focus, with outdoor exercise. This distinction can help with trip planning: for the trails, distance, surface and seasonal use are the main considerations; for Prohvetikivi, it is its religious and cultural-historical context.

Trails and outdoor exercise

The Kudjape–Upa health trails include a 1 km route that is fully lit, as well as 3 km and 5.5 km routes with wood-chip surfaces. They are suitable for exercise year-round and for cross-country skiing in winter. In addition to walking, disc golf is also available on the Kudjape–Upa health trail. The different lengths, surfaces and seasonal uses offer practical points of reference when choosing an activity that suits you.

The Kudjape–Upa nature trail is 5 km long and passes through deciduous and pine forest. While the forest landscape is the main feature of this trail, the health trails are distinguished primarily by their length, surface and suitability for cross-country skiing in winter.

Prohvetikivi and its history

Upa Prohvetikivi is a cultural heritage site with a remarkable cultural and historical background on Saaremaa, but it is not under state protection. It is known as a meeting place for the Moravian Church. Historically, the stone was used for prayers, singing and sermons. Its status as a cultural heritage site and its history of religious use are both defining aspects of the place.

The village centre and the history of the uprising

Stone fences are a prominent feature of the historic village centre, including both historic and more recent examples. The greenery in this area is largely natural. A look at the village centre thus brings together stone features and a predominantly natural landscape.

The Saaremaa uprising lasted from 16 to 21 February 1919. On the evening of 18 February, rebels set up their headquarters in the village of Upa, near Kuressaare, and waited there for reinforcements and ammunition for an attack on the town. On 21 February, the main forces of the rebels besieging the town were defeated in a surprise attack in Upa, Vaivere, Kellamäe and Sikassaare. These events give Upa a specific local connection to the history of the uprising; the subsequent defeat took place across several locations.

Accommodation and a cycling route

Jurna Turismitalu offers accommodation in a thoroughly renovated rehi house dating from the early 20th century. This identifies the building type, period and renovation status—all useful considerations if you would also like to choose accommodation based on the character of the house.

A cycling route begins about 1 km from Jurna Turismitalu and runs around Kuressaare to the small town of Salme and the Viking Village. It is about 25 km long. The figures answer different questions for planning: about 1 km is the distance to the starting point, while around 25 km is the length of the cycling route.
