Two perspectives take centre stage in Kõrbja: the bog landscape of the Mukri Nature Reserve and the historic village landscape in the Koogiste–Kõrbja area. The natural landscape stretches from Lake Eidapere and the formation of the Mukri bog to the Mukri Nature Trail in the area around the village. Local historical traces include preserved park oaks and a former metal workshop. This combination gives the trip both a landscape and a cultural history focus.

Bog, lake and nature reserve

The Mukri Nature Reserve covers 2,166 hectares and also includes the village of Kõrbja. Natural forests surround the Mukri and Ellamaa bogs; the reserve is part of the Mukri Natura 2000 site. Lake Eidapere lies in the northern part of the Ellamaa bog and covers 2.2 hectares. It is small compared with the area of the nature reserve, but central to the formation of the Mukri bog: the bog is one of Estonia’s oldest and formed as the lake gradually filled in around 10,000 to 9,000 years ago. Three peat islands lie in Lake Eidapere without being connected to the mineral soil; numerous white and small water lilies grow there. This lack of connection distinguishes the peat islands from areas firmly connected to the mineral soil. Lake Eidapere thus links present-day natural features with the bog’s long history of formation.

The Mukri Nature Trail

Near Kõrbja, the Mukri Nature Trail passes numerous bog pools and bog lakes. An observation tower offers views across the landscape; a boardwalk on the trail leads into the bog and is also suitable for walks with children. This makes it possible to choose the route according to different interests: bog waters, views, or a section leading into the bog along the boardwalk. There is a picnic area at one end of the trail, providing a place to take a break along the way. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check the current status of the picnic area before visiting.

Historical traces in the area

A historic village landscape has been preserved in the Koogiste–Kõrbja area. Only the former park oaks remain of Kõrbja Manor. The area’s history also includes its former production: a metal workshop in the Koogiste–Kõrbja area made threshing machine sets. The park oaks represent a surviving feature of the former manor, while the workshop’s history turns attention to local manufacturing. The threshing machine sets give this part of the area’s history a tangible technical dimension.

Nature and history as distinct points of focus

When planning your visit, it is useful to note the different nature of these two themes: the natural area has a specific route nearby, the Mukri Nature Trail; the cultural history encompasses a preserved village landscape and individual traces of manor and production history. By choosing your focus, you can explore Kõrbja either through its bog landscape or through its local history.
