Seto history, outdoor activities and a lakeshore with springs offer three distinct ways to experience Värska during a stay. Highlights include cultural sites with different themes, trails of varying lengths and activities whose character changes with the seasons.
Seto history at cultural sites and along trails
The exhibition at Värska Külastuskeskus – Kindral Reegi Maja brings together the history of Petseri Põhjalaager and Värska’s past as a spa region. For an on-foot introduction to local cultural and military heritage, take the Põhjalaagri hiking trail in Värska: the walking route is 4 km long. On the shore of Lake Õrsava stood the summer training centre Petseri Põhjalaager of the Estonian armed forces, founded in the second half of the 1920s.
The original iconostasis from the early 20th century has been preserved in Värska Püha Georgiuse kirik. It also includes a 17th-century icon of Saint George painted on wood. The church’s main celebration is St George’s Day, observed in Setomaa on 6 May. It culminates in an afternoon kirmask, a village festival.
Värska Talumuuseum features a farmstead complex that gives a good impression of a prosperous Seto farmstead from the 1920s, with a partially enclosed courtyard. The museum also includes an old threshing barn, used as a spacious handicraft shop in summer. The same museum complex therefore showcases both a historic farmstead and seasonal crafts.
The grounds of Värska Külastuskeskus – Kindral Reegi Maja offer picnic spots and the option to hire boats, bicycles, pedal boats and ice skates. The selection includes activities on land and water, with ice skates also available.
Plan outdoor activities by season and route length
Värska Terviserada is a year-round, nature-oriented outdoor recreation area with pine forest and gentle terrain. It is suitable for walking or focused training. The facilities vary by season: in winter, there is a floodlit cross-country ski trail and a sledding hill. In summer, the main features are a tartan-surfaced stadium, playgrounds and a climbing tower.
The Pikalombi hiking trails offer two route lengths: 3.8 km and 9.1 km. The shorter option is just under the 4 km Põhjalaagri walking trail, while the longer one covers considerably more ground. Possible starting points for Pikalombi are the car park at Värska Veekeskus or the Värska Sanatorium side of Lake Värska. The distances and starting points provide practical information to help choose a route.
Promenade, spring and Seto dishes
The Värska lakeside promenade is about 300 m long and has two viewing platforms. Silmaläte is the largest of several springs that emerge along the promenade’s shore. Metal cups are provided beside the spring for drinking the spring water. In a small area, visitors can enjoy a short lakeside walk, viewpoints and a specific place to stop by the water.
In summer, Seto Line trips depart from the small harbour on the beach at Värska Sanatorium. Those interested in regional cuisine can find dishes on the Seto Tsäimaja menu including sõir, suulliim (a cold soup), open pies or piiragu, oven-baked porridges and pliinid. These dishes offer another way to explore Setomaa, alongside its museums, church and trails.
