Ihamaru brings together distinctive landscape features and a local history shaped by former transport routes and regional production. Palojärv and Postitee offer different natural highlights; the historic dairy, community centre, and wine offerings add further dimensions to the picture of the area.

Landscape: Palojärv and Postitee

Palojärv combines a natural feature with a practical role for cycling and hiking tourists: it is a pleasant place to camp. The extensive Ihamaru palu stretches north of the village, and the lake lies within this area. It covers 6.9 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of 3.3 metres. Water lobelia also grows in Palojärv. The area and depth figures give a sense of the lake's size, while the water lobelia adds a distinctive botanical feature.

A different landscape highlight is the nearly 7.5-kilometre-long Ihamaru–Puskaru section of Postitee. Spruce hedges, maple and birch avenues, and regularly planted poplars and apple trees characterise the route. Unlike Palojärv, a single natural feature, this is a road defined by a succession of trees and hedges. It offers another landscape focus to consider alongside the lake.

Routes, the dairy, and local history

Historically, Ihamaru was a road junction: a post station and an inn stood at the intersection of the Tartu–Võru and Põlva–Kanepi roads. The area's history is therefore linked not only to individual buildings, but also to its former role in transport. Ihamaru is also home to a historic steam-powered dairy with a long history that has been significant to the region. These two themes offer a different focus from the landscape: the junction tells a story of transport and hospitality, while the dairy represents production of regional importance.

Events and winemaking

Concerts and celebrations are occasionally held at the Ihamaru külakeskus. At screenings of new films, a whitewashed boulder wall serves as the screen. Unlike the landscape and historical landmarks, these events depend on specific dates. Before your trip, check whether a concert, celebration, or film screening is scheduled during your stay.

Ala Juusa offers wine tours with tastings and snacks. Carefully selected grape varieties suited to the Estonian climate are grown there. Grapes also grow in the Rüübi vineyard, and as large a share as possible is used to make its own wines. The two descriptions draw attention to different aspects of winemaking: at Ala Juusa, the focus is on a tour and tasting, while the Rüübi vineyard highlights growing and using its own grapes. These offer different starting points for choosing what interests you: a tour with tasting on the one hand, and using homegrown grapes for wine on the other.
