As a destination, Treimani brings together architectural history and coastal landscapes. Its two churches, the Treimani Museum with old tools and objects from the fishing village, and the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route offer different perspectives on the place. The churches stand out for their historical dates and architectural features; for the coastal trail, the condition of the ground is a practical planning consideration.

Churches and their history

The Lutheran and Orthodox churches can be distinguished by different features. For the Lutheran church, its consecration year, historical name and altarpiece are key points of reference. The Orthodox church is characterized above all by its year of completion, its architect and its roof design.

Treimani’s Lutheran church was consecrated on 21 September 1867 and was historically also known as the Orajõe House of Prayer. A 2012 account describes it as the oldest continuously operating church in Häädemeeste rural municipality. A description from 2012 identifies the altarpiece’s subject as Christ walking on the water and holding Peter by the hand.

The Orthodox church was completed in 1935 and designed by architect Märt Merivälja. Its national romantic character is reflected in its hipped roof and the small, round tent-roofed tower on the roof ridge. An onion-shaped tower was also planned, but was not built at the request of the local population. The municipal heritage list dated 5 December 2023 lists the church as a protected immovable monument under registration number 16645. This identifies both the roof design as built and a specific departure from the original plan.

Museum and orientation

The Treimani Museum displays old tools and objects from the fishing village. It thus complements the churches with a different perspective: the focus here is on objects from the fishing village, rather than the architectural history of sacred buildings.

Treimani Library was converted in 2005 into a library and a tourist information and visitor centre. A rest area and an information board were set up beside Treimani Community Centre. If you plan to stop there, check the current condition of these two facilities beforehand.

Coastal trail and landscape

There is a dedicated section of the coastal hiking trail in Treimani. After Treimani, the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route runs for 2.8 kilometres along a narrow beach. The beach may be sandy, stony or densely overgrown in places, so the ground is not uniform. If you plan to hike this section, allow for these changing conditions and check the trail conditions before setting out.

The municipal protected areas list dated 5 December 2023 places Treimani within the 135.6-hectare Kivikupitsa Landscape Protection Area. This provides a way to appreciate the area’s landscape as well as its churches and coastal trail.
