The Sindi-Kalev Factory shaped Sindi town in the 19th century. Alongside its industrial history, the Pärnu River, the Sindi rapids and a network of green spaces connected to the river are among the town’s distinctive features. For trip planning, this offers a choice of historical themes, water activities and routes through parks.
Factory history and historic buildings
The workers’ settlement of the Sindi-Kalev Factory was founded in 1833, when Riga merchant Johann C. Wöhrmann (1784–1843) established a wool mill and a single-industry settlement there. It comprised 33 houses arranged in three rows. By the mid-19th century, the Sindi-Kalev Factory was the largest industrial enterprise in Livonia.
The Sindi Museum is housed in the historic building where the Sindi Kalev Factory Association was founded on 17 November 1902. Construction of Sindi’s Orthodox church began in 1895; it was funded by Moscow merchant Roman Shön and the Sindi-Kalev Factory Association. The church was consecrated on 5 July 1899.
The Pärnu River and the Sindi rapids
The 104-kilometre Paide–Sindi river route is designed for kayaks, canoes and SUPs. It ends at Sindi’s open-air swimming area on the left bank of the river, about 600 metres downstream from Sindi Bridge. The Türi-Tori Downriver Race is also relevant when planning around the event calendar: it is held on the Pärnu during the spring flood period; dates and arrangements may change.
The Sindi rapids were created in 2020 to replace a weir that had stood there. After it was demolished, fish spawning grounds were created and the Pärnu was opened to fish migration. Activities at the rapids include whitewater paddling, kayak slalom, freestyle paddling, canoeing and rafting. They also serve as a starting and finishing point for water tours. Stages of the Nordic Cup are held there in Estonia. Activity conditions may vary, and competition schedules may also change.
Parks and trails
Sindi’s first green space was created in 1834, after the cloth factory was completed. Sindi’s largest network of green spaces is connected to the Pärnu River; Sõpruse Park and Kiriku Park are protected as part of this network. Older trees and several avenues in Kiriku, Vabriku, Hirveaia, Kooli and Klubi parks date from the mid- to late 19th century.
The Sindi health trail runs through Sõpruse Park and offers a view of the river. The park also has a children’s playground. Sindi’s health and ski trails are suitable for running, walking and cross-country skiing; seasonal conditions on the trails may vary.
When looking for a holiday rental in Sindi town, it is helpful to distinguish between the two: the town’s history is associated with specific historical dates, while water activities and trails also depend on event schedules and seasonal conditions. Check the dates of the Türi-Tori Downriver Race if you would like to plan your trip around it.
