Kabli combines the sandy beach on the Gulf of Riga with coastal hiking trails, bird migration research and local cultural events. Nature education and a café with seasonal opening hours may also be highlights of a stay. When planning your trip, consider whether you would like to focus more on the coast and hiking, nature or culture.

Coast and trails around Kabli

The sandy beach “Kabli rand” lies on the shore of the Gulf of Riga and is a designated stop on the Ranniku matkarada. Section 31 of the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route ends in the centre of Kabli. This gives you both a designated beach stop and a specific endpoint in the village to help orient you when planning a coastal hike.

Another trail is the Kabli looduse õpperada, the Kabli nature trail. It is marked with wooden signposts and information boards. The 74-kilometre RMK Oandu-Aegviidu-Ikla hiking route passes the Kabli külastuskeskus (Kabli Visitor Centre) and continues to the Kabli linnujaam (Kabli Bird Station). The routes differ in their stated scope: from a marked nature trail to a long route explicitly measuring 74 kilometres.

Bird migration and nature education

The observation tower at the Kabli Bird Station (Kabli linnujaam) is located in the heart of the Kabli Nature Reserve (Kabli looduskaitseala). In autumn, the bird station has a 17-metre-high Heligoland trap. Birds have been ringed and migration studied there for over 50 years. The tower, seasonal trap and long-running research offer different aspects of Kabli’s nature.

The Kabli Visitor Centre offers nature education programmes for children and adults. This is a separate offering from the research at the bird station: the programmes are intended for both age groups, while the ringing and study of bird migration describe the long-running work carried out there. If you choose Kabli for its nature, you can take these different focuses into account when planning your trip.

Culture, events and maritime heritage

Kabli Seltsimaja hosts concerts, theatre performances, workshops and various cultural programmes. Every year, it also holds an Estonian Independence Day celebration for locals and visitors. The programme includes traditional potato and barley groats porridge. If you would like to attend the celebration, check the specific event dates in advance.

The Kabli muinastulede öö is also held on Kabli Beach. The tradition continues and attracts visitors from both the surrounding area and further afield. If this event is important to your trip, check the dates before making plans. This lets you plan your stay around a specific occasion without assuming a date.

Another maritime theme is the Jaala Kaja in Kabli. It commemorates the 150th anniversary of the launch of the first ocean-going sailing ship built here. Alongside the events, local maritime history is another distinct cultural point of reference.

Plan for seasonal opening hours

Kabli Pagar-pood is a café where pastries and yeast buns are made on site. It has seasonal opening hours, so check whether it is open before you visit. This practical limitation is especially relevant if you plan to make a café visit a fixed part of your day.

When looking for accommodation in Kabli, the different reasons for visiting can help you choose when to travel: coastal hiking and the beach, bird migration and nature education, or culture and maritime heritage. For events and the seasonally open café, it is worth checking dates and opening hours in advance.
