The Kopra–Ikla section of the RMK hiking trail gives a sense of the vast scale of travel in Häädemeeste: it is about 74 kilometres long, passes through Kabli and Treimani in Häädemeeste Parish, and ends in the village of Ikla on the Estonian-Latvian border. Numerous rest areas, fire pits and campsites make it possible to hike the route over several days. This scale is important when planning your trip: this is a longer hike, not a short detour.
Birdlife and trails around Kabli
The Kabli Nature Trail starts at the Kabli Visitor Centre. The centre offers nature exhibitions and films and provides access to the trail. Its special features include a world of nest boxes and two birdwatching towers. Kabli Beach is only a few hundred metres from the Kabli Bird Station, the nature trail and the visitor centre. This means you can plan to explore the beach and birdlife at nearby locations.
In autumn, a 17-metre-high Heligoland trap is set up at the Kabli Bird Station. Birds have been ringed there and migration studied for more than 50 years. The station is run by the Estonian Environment Agency and operates regularly every year from mid-August to early November. If you are planning a visit during this period, it is advisable to check the seasonal operating information before you travel.
Comparing the two nature trails can help you choose: the Kabli Nature Trail is 1.8 kilometres long and starts at the visitor centre; the Rannametsa-Tolkuse Nature Trail is a 2.2-kilometre circular route. On this trail, the section from the car park to the bog lake is accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs. The trails therefore differ not only in length, but also in their layout and the specific section described as accessible.
Culture and local traditions
The Häädemeeste Museum presents the region’s cultural heritage, including the development of sailing and fishing, as well as the history of the church, school and community life. Guided tours cover the traditions of fishing families, the history of sailing and local cultural history. Maritime themes sit alongside other aspects of community life, offering different ways to explore the region’s history.
The Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul in Treimani was completed in 1935 and is a cultural monument of the Republic of Estonia. The Orthodox Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Tahkuranna was built in 1872 from red brick without natural stone. Domed ceilings, panelled arches and ceiling paintings shape its interior. Visits are possible by prior arrangement.
Events also offer a variety of themes. Kabli Seltsimaja holds an annual celebration for Estonian Independence Day. Tahku Tare hosts traditional Valentine’s Day concert dinners with a multi-course meal. The long-standing traditions at Treimani Rahvamaja include the “Suvesüda Treimanis” cultural weeks. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates in advance.
At Lemme Beach
The campsite at Lemme Beach has 15 fire pits, dry toilets and covered areas with tables and benches. Seasonal services may change; check the current information before your visit.
