A marked bathing area by the harbours and a nearly 54-kilometre route for pedestrians and cyclists give Rohuküla two very different points of interest. Add the ferry route to Heltermaa, the changing landscape along a section of the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route, and the port’s military history. If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, it’s worth first considering whether the crossing, the history, swimming, or cycling and hiking is the main focus of your stay.

Ferry Port and Military History

The port of Rohuküla serves the Rohuküla–Heltermaa ferry route. If you’re planning a crossing, check the timetable before travelling; timetables and operators may change. The timetable is the practical point of reference when coordinating the crossing with other plans.

The Rohuküla military port served as a repair base and an anchorage for submarines and surface warships. In the summer of 1915, construction began at the port on a Baltic Fleet base for destroyers and torpedo boats. The port’s history can therefore be understood both through its roles at the time and through the start of construction on this specific base.

Bathing Area and Two Routes

There is an established bathing area, marked on the ground, by the ports of Rohuküla. It offers a different focus from the two routes: this is a place for swimming, not a trail. If you’re planning your stay around activities, you can consider this swimming stop separately from your choice of route.

The Läänemaa Tervisetee is nearly 54 kilometres long and designed for pedestrians and cyclists. It was built on the railway embankment of the Turba–Haapsalu–Rohuküla railway line. The path has a compacted gravel surface and is marked with kilometre posts and markers at 100-metre intervals. The total length is an important factor in planning, but it does not indicate how long a trip will take. As route conditions may change, it’s advisable to check the path’s current status before setting out. The markers also help divide the long path into shorter sections.

The Tuuru–Rohuküla section of the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route is characterised by small villages alternating with fields, pastures, farmsteads and limestone quarries. The entire section is suitable for cycling, with the exception of the nature trail. If you’re planning a cycling trip, take this exception into account when choosing your route.

Comparing the Routes

The main points of comparison are their different features: for the Tervisetee, these are its total length, surface and markers; for the Tuuru–Rohuküla section, they are the changing landscape and the exception for cyclists. This can help you choose according to whether route length and surface conditions or the landscape described are more important to you.
