Haeska brings the birdlife of Matsalu Bay into focus alongside a long manor history. The observation tower, coastal meadow and protected area offer different aspects of the natural landscape, while the manor adds cultural history. Planning therefore comes down to two practical questions: Which migration period suits your trip, and would you like to include the historic manor as well as birdwatching?

Views across meadow and bay

The Haeska observation tower is ten metres high and offers views across a coastal meadow and most of the inner part of Matsalu Bay. The coastal meadow in Haeska village is one of the most representative coastal meadows in Matsalu National Park. The tower thus connects views of a specific meadow landscape with a broad perspective over the inner bay area. The coastal meadow is itself a defining feature, not merely a backdrop for birdwatching.

Spring and autumn migration

The best periods for observing migratory birds from the observation tower are April to May and September to October. Spring and autumn are therefore two seasonal options. In spring, you can watch thousands of whooper swans and tundra swans spending time in Matsalu Bay from the Haeska birdwatching tower. Haeska beach is considered the best place to take in the bay’s diversity of birdlife. A total of 128 different bird species have been observed from the tower in a single day. This figure refers to one day, while the months listed provide a time frame for planning your trip.

Nature conservation also lends the visit a distinct perspective: the Haeska hoiuala protected area safeguards a stopover site used by lesser white-fronted geese during migration. Alongside the opportunities for observation, this highlights the importance of a stopover site for a particular migratory bird species. This conservation purpose adds a specific protective function to the broader picture of species diversity.

The manor and accommodation

Haeska Manor was burned down in 1560 during the Livonian War. The main building dates from 1805, and the manor park is listed as a cultural monument. The main building is privately owned and currently houses an accommodation business. Check current availability before making plans. The manor’s history and its protected park add a cultural and historical focus to the natural setting.

Haeska in its regional context

The route along the northern shore of Matsalu Bay includes Haeska Manor, among other places. The northern shore stretches for about 79 kilometres, providing a broader regional context for the area. Kicksled hikes by Tuulingu are offered at Tuuliku in Haeska village, within Matsalu National Park. This activity offers another way to explore Haeska beyond birdwatching. If you plan to take such a hike, check seasonal availability in advance.
