Virtsu lies on the coast of the Väinameri, on the Virtsu Peninsula. A car ferry connects the port of Virtsu with the port of Kuivastu on the island of Muhu; the crossing takes about 25 minutes. Check the timetable and crossing time before your trip, as the duration is approximate. On the route from Pärnu to Virtsu, the last 17 kilometres pass the wooded Laelatu meadow and the island of Puhtulaid. This gives you two distinct landmarks to orient yourself by on the way: the crossing to Muhu and the landscape along the final stretch from Pärnu.
Nature and the Seasons
The Puhtu pine is a protected natural feature in Virtsu alevik, within the Puhtu-Laelatu Nature Reserve. The Puhtulaiu nature trail passes through Puhtu Forest; visitors can roam freely there and observe natural development.
From the Puhtulaiu observation tower at the southwestern tip of the peninsula, you can watch the spring and autumn migration of waterbirds. Spring and autumn are therefore suitable seasons for a visit focused on bird migration; the nature trail offers a different focus on the forest and its natural development.
A former narrow-gauge railway embankment is located by the wooded Laelatu meadow. It adds a connection to former transport infrastructure to the area’s nature themes.
History and Culture
The Baroque gatehouse with its gabled roof is the most remarkable surviving part of Virtsu Manor. A rail connection from Virtsu to Rapla operated from 1931 to 1968. These traces of architecture and transport point to different chapters in history.
A castle was built on a small island in the coastal area of Suur väin to control shipping in the strait and the connection between the islands and the mainland. The monument to Friedrich Schiller was erected in 1813.
The Virtsu Museum was founded in 1996, after photos, memories, life stories and local objects had been collected through local initiative. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; arrange a time before you travel.
Activities on the Water
Boat trips are offered from Virtsu, with views of Matsalu Bay, small islands and the expanse of the Baltic Sea. Check availability before your trip. The Virtsu Peninsula and sections between the islets are recommended kayaking routes; conditions may vary. The activities have different focuses: boat trips centre on the views, while the kayaking recommendations focus on route selection and conditions.
When looking for a hotel for your trip to Virtsu, it helps to choose your travel dates together with the purpose of your visit: bird migration can be observed in spring and autumn, while museum visits require a prior arrangement.
