Pivarootsi offers two distinct perspectives for planning a trip: the Pivarootsi Windmill, with its construction history, museum and rooftop gallery, and the peninsula’s landscape. The cultural side features the windmill and Estonian applied arts from the Soviet era; the natural side is shaped by coastal meadows, plants, migratory birds and a nature trail. The themes you choose to focus on can guide your trip planning.

Windmill: Construction History, Art and Views

The Pivarootsi Windmill was built in 1869 and restored in 2004. The fourth floor houses the Museum of Soviet-era Estonian Applied Arts. Access to the museum is subject to the windmill’s visitor arrangements. This brings together the building’s history and an art collection with its own historical and regional context.

Applied arts draw attention to designed objects and how they are used, not just to art as an image. The rooftop gallery on the fifth floor offers views of the landscape and the sea. A guided tour of the Pivarootsi Windmill is available on request; arrange it in advance.

Coastal Landscape and Nature Trail

The area around Pivarootsi combines calm sea, low coastal meadows, alvars and juniper thickets. Local flora includes Estonian orchids, anemones, numerous hazel bushes and junipers. The landscape forms provide the broad setting, while the named plants add specific botanical examples.

The coast of the Pivarootsi Peninsula is a resting place for several migratory bird species. Along the nature trail, 16 information boards provide details about local biodiversity and sights; individual boards may change over time. The trail thus covers two perspectives: natural diversity and sights.

Crafts and Special Events

Traditional folk craft techniques are kept alive at craft workshops in Pivarootsi. Visitors can make South Läänemaa Pätti. This means that alongside the broader topic of crafts, a specific item is also in focus. Confirm workshop availability before your visit. These are two different ways to experience culture: while the museum explores applied arts from the Soviet era, the workshops offer hands-on experience of traditional craft techniques through making South Läänemaa Pätti.

For 2026, five-course author dinners for small groups were announced at the Pivarootsi Windmill on selected Saturdays from April to October. As dates may change, check specific dates before making plans.

Getting There and Getting Around

An intercity bus runs on the Varbla–Pivarootsi route; check the current timetable before travelling. The Pivarootsi–Virtsu walking section uses paved and gravel roads. For planning, this information answers two different questions: the bus information concerns the timetable, while the walking section information concerns the road surfaces used. This allows bus travel and the walking route to be treated as separate planning decisions.
