A former forestry district office sets the scene in Oandu for an exploration of Lääne-Viru: the Oandu Visitor Centre is housed in a 150-year-old building that once served as a forestry district office. Forest history and trails through nature are among the specific themes of the trip, alongside castles, manor houses and museums that reveal other sides of the region.

Forest trails and natural sites

Near Oandu, two hiking trails are easy to distinguish by length: the nature trail through the primeval forest is 4.7 kilometres long, while the Oandu–Võsu hiking trail measures 9.5 kilometres. As trail conditions can change with the seasons, check the current situation before setting out.

Käsmu also combines an experience of nature with its own local history. There is a hiking and cycling route as well as walking trails where you can explore the natural surroundings. At the same time, Käsmu was known as “Captain’s Village.” This historic nickname offers a cultural perspective on the place, while the trails put time outdoors at the centre of your visit.

The Tudu Forest Hut by Lake Tudu Moor offers another way to connect with nature. It is located in the Tudusoo Nature Reserve and provides a place to rest; there is also a swimming area there in summer. Visitors to the nature reserve can use the hut free of charge. The path from the car park to the hut is suitable for wheelchair users. If accessibility is important to your plans, check the details before your visit.

Explore castles and manor houses

Rakvere Castle brings 16th-century castle life to life as a themed park. Visitors can dress up as knights and warriors, and Shenkenberg Tavern in the castle serves food based on medieval recipes. If you are planning to stop by specifically for these dishes, check the current menu before your visit. Historical interpretation and a meal inspired by it are two distinct aspects of the same castle visit.

Palmse Manor takes you into another chapter of cultural heritage. The manor is one of Estonia’s most magnificent Baroque manor houses. Together with the open-air museum, it formed the country’s first fully restored manor complex. The open-air museum includes parks, gardens and historic buildings. Rather than viewing just one house, you can discover several parts of a manor complex here.

Palmse Pub is also part of this destination and serves traditional dishes, including authentic farmhand porridge and homemade bread. The menu may change; check before your visit whether the dishes mentioned are currently available. For another taste of regional food culture, Shenkenberg Tavern connects its cuisine with the medieval theme of Rakvere Castle.

Forest culture, crafts and historic sites

The Sagadi Forest Museum focuses on Estonia’s forests and forest cultural heritage, including hunting and woodworking. The permanent exhibition “Forested Path” gives visitors the chance to test their knowledge of Estonia’s forests. In Moe, a different story of production takes centre stage: alcohol has been produced there for more than 300 years, and production continues to this day. The Moe Distillery Museum and Visitor Centre displays authentic historic equipment and offers guided tours and tastings. Check their availability before your trip.

Toolse Order Castle, dating back to the Middle Ages, lies on Estonia’s northern coast. Of Estonia’s castles, it is the closest to the sea. Guided tours at the castle offer insights into its history; check their availability before your visit. In Vao, an exhibition on the first floor of the tower fortress tells the story of the fortress and the manor. The tower was built from local limestone in the second half of the 14th century.

The Võivere Windmill is the only surviving building of the Võivere Manor estate. A point on the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Struve Geodetic Arc lies beside the windmill in Lääne-Virumaa; the windmill’s three-storey exhibition tells the story of the Struve Geodetic Arc. Nostalgiakeskus Kadrina focuses on a different aspect of history: through numerous objects from homes, workplaces and collective farms, it illustrates everyday life in the Soviet era. Discoveries in Lääne-Viru thus range from forest trails and manor houses to technical and everyday artefacts from different eras.
