Põltsamaa Castle is a distinctive starting point for exploring the town: within its old walls is the Põltsamaa Museum, and a seven-storey tower leads up to an observation platform with views over the town. Other themes range from churches and food history to parks and the Põltsamaa River.

Castle, Museum and Churches

Põltsamaa Castle was founded on the riverbank in 1272. At the Põltsamaa Museum, you can book guided tours and educational programmes. Since summer 2024, the permanent exhibition “Modern Wine and Food from Põltsamaa” has been open to visitors at the castle. The observation tower also offers a direct perspective on the town: visitors can climb its seven floors to the observation platform.

The history of architecture is also reflected in two churches in different ways. Põltsamaa Niguliste Church was built into the walls of a 13th-century castle gate passage and a gun tower erected around 1500. Põltsamaa Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit was consecrated on 10 September 1895. Together, the buildings invite visitors on a cultural and historical stay to notice both older building structures and a precisely dated event.

Food History and Wine

The exhibition at the castle is dedicated to wine and food from Põltsamaa. The Põltsamaa Food Museum presents the history of food production in the town from the 1920s to the present day. Its historical span thus explicitly reaches the present. In addition, fruit and berry wines have been produced in Põltsamaa for almost 100 years. Those interested in regional food and wine culture will find several ways to explore it here: a permanent exhibition, a museum devoted to production history, and a long-standing wine tradition.

Rose Island, River and Parks

Rose Island in the centre of Põltsamaa was designed in 2001; 2,000 roses grow there. The island offers views of the Põltsamaa River and the fish ladder. The river is 135 kilometres long and the third-longest in Estonia. Canoes can be rented on the river; if you plan to do so, it is best to check availability in advance.

The parks also each have their own character. The park of Uue-Põltsamaa Manor was laid out as a French geometric garden at the end of the 18th century and is protected both as a natural site and as a monument. More than 6,000 trees grow in Friendship Park. It is home to the monumental sculpture “Road to Olympus”, which bears the names of Estonian Olympic medallists throughout history. Kördiööbiku Park is named after a pre-war school in the park grounds where girls learned to cook, sew and knit.

A Route for Independent Exploration

The Põltsamaa discovery game can be completed independently on foot or by bicycle. Its main route is 4.5 kilometres long and leads from the castle to Kuningamäe. The game passes through historic sites, green parks, riverside paths and landscapes with views of nature. Alongside the individual cultural and landscape attractions, it offers a clearly described route with a set distance and choice of transport.

If you are looking for a hotel in Põltsamaa, use your preferred focus for the stay as a guide: the castle and churches offer architectural and cultural history; the museums and exhibition explore food production and wine; and the parks and river offer further landscape and activity options. The main route is an independent option on foot or by bicycle; renting a canoe offers another way to get out on the water.
