In Rannapungerja, you can choose from several distinct highlights: the Luite Hiking Trail to the river mouth, views of Lake Peipus from the lighthouse, summer music and a workshop during the fishing season. The concert and workshop are tied to specific seasons; the lighthouse and the history of archaeological settlement offer two different historical perspectives. Which of these themes matters most to you may also shape your choice of travel dates.
Hiking and paddling on the Rannapungerja River
The Luite Hiking Trail leads to the mouth of the Rannapungerja River and back again. The river mouth is therefore a clearly defined destination, and the return journey is part of the route. A kayaking trip for beginners is also available on the Rannapungerja River on request. The two activities have different focuses: the hiking trail takes you on foot to the river mouth, while the kayaking option is an activity on the water. If you would like to plan a kayaking trip, request it for your preferred date.
Lighthouse, views and summer music
The Rannapungerja Lighthouse was built in 1934. At the foot of the tower is a viewing platform with wooden decking, from which you can see Lake Peipus and the lakeshore landscape. The structure and the view come together in one specific place: the lighthouse provides a historical landmark, while the platform opens up views of the lake and the shore.
The traditional Tuletorni concerts are held every summer next to the lighthouse. The Tuletorni concert is a two-day summer music event held outdoors. Its location and recurring summer format give the concert a distinct connection to the lighthouse, while its two-day duration is important for planning your time. The programme for the 2026 Tuletorni concert included a hike organised by RMK; the event took place on 18 July. If a concert is the reason for your trip, check the dates for the relevant edition.
Two historical perspectives
Archaeological material from Rannapungerja sheds light on settlement along the northern shore of Lake Peipus, which dates back more than 9,000 years. This offers a different timescale from the year the lighthouse was built: the focus here is not a single structure, but the long history of settlement along a stretch of shoreline. If you are interested in history, you can consider these two timeframes side by side—a dated structure and a settlement history that stretches back more than nine millennia.
An activity during the fishing season
A vendace-salting workshop is offered in the village of Rannapungerja during the fishing season. Its timing differs from that of the Tuletorni concerts: the concert is associated with summer, while the workshop takes place during the fishing season. If you would like to plan your trip around the workshop, ask about a suitable date; reservations are made by email. This lets you include the seasonal activity in your plans without assuming its date from the summer programme.
