At Kalvi Manor, three escarpments converge to form an approximately 50-metre-high Ontika-type cliff. The 15 km² Kalvi Klint Island is separated from the North Estonian limestone plateau: by the Aseri Fault in the south and the Pada Klint Valley in the west. This means that two landscape scales can be distinguished in Kalvi: the specific formation at the manor and the larger klint island with its geological boundaries. If you are interested in coastal landscapes, you can take both a striking cliff and a broader landform into account when choosing where to stay.
Park, plants and waterways
Kalvi Manor Park is a protected park covering 13.3 hectares. A growing site for the protected orchid species Dactylorhiza incarnata is recorded in the Kalvi Hoiuala; the species belongs to protection category III. Another botanical feature is the permanent habitat of the lichen Biatoridium monasteriense near Kalvi, part of which lies within the Aseri Landscape Protection Area. These nature features are distinct: the park area, the recorded orchid growing site and the lichen habitat, partly located in the landscape protection area. For nature enthusiasts, this means there is more than one plant-related attraction; the different forms of protection are also part of the area’s character.
The Pada River protected area also includes the village of Kalvi in Lääne-Viru County. Its conservation objectives include river and stream habitats, as well as the habitat of the European river lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis). This extends the area’s nature conservation significance beyond the park and plant habitats to include waterways and the habitat of another species.
Trail, route and coastal planning
A signposted trail follows an old road embankment parallel to the coast and leads to the RMK Kalvi lõkkekoht. There is an information board and a grill at the destination. For a walking excursion, the trail therefore offers a clearly described route and a named destination; the information board and grill are additional features of this stopping point.
Route No. 5 offers a different way to explore the area: it connects Kõrtsialuse, Kalvi and Aseri, with Kalvi Manor listed as a stopping point. Unlike the signposted trail, which ends at the RMK Kalvi lõkkekoht, this route focuses on connecting several places. When choosing an excursion, you can therefore distinguish between a trail with a specific destination and a route that links several places.
A stopping area intended for vehicles and bicycles at Kalvi Beach was expanded; the work was completed in 2023–2024. This completed development at the beach is another specific coastal feature of the area.
If you are considering Kalvi as a place to stay, these details can help you refine your destination choice: the cliff and klint for landscape interests, the park and protected habitats for nature, and the trail and route for different kinds of excursions. When looking for a holiday apartment in Kalvi, you can first consider which of these features is most important for your trip.
