Suuremõisa combines Baroque castle history with a protected park landscape. The present-day park covers more than 45 hectares and is protected for its natural and historical value. Its alder avenue is 4.7 kilometres long. The hectare figure describes the total area, while the kilometre figure refers to a single park avenue—two different measures that make the character of the grounds easier to grasp.

Park and Garden

The area between Suuremõisa Castle and the river was laid out as a landscape park in the first half of the 19th century. The grounds can therefore be understood both through their current protected status and their historical origins. The castle grounds also include a flower garden created by Hiiumaa Vocational School. The park and garden represent two different scales: the expansive landscape and a single, specifically named garden area.

Castle History and Visitor Information

Suuremõisa Castle is designed in the Baroque style and was built between 1755 and 1760. Countess Ebba-Margaretha von Stenbock, née De la Gardie, commissioned its construction. The style, construction period and patron provide a specific context for the castle’s history; those interested in the building’s origins can consider its architecture alongside the historical figure who commissioned it.

The castle has a museum room dedicated to the history of the manor. Visitor access may vary by season, so it is advisable to check the latest information in advance. Guided tours can be arranged at the castle for groups of any size; book one in advance if you would like a tour to be part of your visit.

Getting Active in the Area

Suuremõisa’s outdoor gym is another option if you would like to include some exercise in your trip. It has seven fitness stations, is located very close to the castle and sports building, and is suitable for everyone. The equipment may change. Alongside the castle and landscape, visitors can also choose a sporting activity.

Pühalepa Church

Hiiumaa’s oldest stone building is Pühalepa Church. Inside is a late Renaissance stone pulpit from 1636, created by Joachim Winter. The churchyard also contains two partly preserved ring crosses, considered the only ones of their kind on Hiiumaa and Saaremaa. There is also a small Baroque burial chapel for Ebba Margaretha Stenbock, the founder of Suuremõisa Castle. While Baroque architecture and its origins are the focus at the castle, the pulpit, ring crosses and burial chapel offer a different perspective on the history of religious architecture and art.

Restaurant and Other Amenities

The castle has a café-restaurant. The restaurant serves local products from the forest, fields and sea; its menu description may change. There is also a souvenir and book stand in the castle, and its selection may vary. If a particular meal or the stand is important to your plans, check the latest information in advance.
