The small harbor of Lohusalu lies on Estonia’s northern coast, right next to Laulasmaa. Sandy beaches, a summer cultural program at the harbor and hiking trails on the peninsula give visitors several ways to enjoy the area. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Lohusalu, you can plan around whether cultural events or coastal trails are your main focus.

Harbor, Beach and Summer Program

In summer, dance evenings, concerts, theater performances and other cultural events take place at Lohusalu Harbor. The program offers entertainment for people of all ages; individual events may vary. If you want to plan your trip around a particular concert, theater performance or dance evening, check the dates for your preferred travel period. Lohusalu also has sandy beaches. This gives you a choice between a seasonal cultural event and time at the beach as different priorities.

Two Hiking Trails on the Peninsula

The Laulasmaa–Keila-Joa–Lohusalu hiking trail is 18 km long and leads to the northern shore of Lohusalu Bay. The Laulasmaa kahe ranna matkarada is a circular trail that runs along the southern and northern coasts of the Lohusalu Peninsula and through forest paths. You can therefore choose between two types of route: an 18 km trail to the bay and a loop along both coasts.

The circular trail starts in the parking lot at Laulasmaa Spa, where an information board displays a route map. Blue and yellow stripes mark the trail on trees and rocks. The map at the start and the trail markers along the way provide two points of reference for the same loop. If you would like to extend your hike, you can take a detour into Lohusalu village. If you want to combine both coastal and forest paths in one hike, the circular trail offers both.

Fishing Village and Protected Dune Forests

Lohusalu is mentioned as a fishing village as early as the 15th century. Lohusalu maastikukaitseala was established on December 20, 2022, to protect Lohusalu’s dune forests locally. These two details highlight different aspects of the area: its history as a fishing village and the protection of its dune forests. At the cliff slope known as Tornimäe pank, the cliff face reaches a height of 20 meters. Sandy beaches, protected dune forests and this cliff face show different aspects of Lohusalu’s landscape, spanning scenery from the beach to the klint.

Planning Your Trip

When planning your trip, you can consider your reason for visiting and your choice of route separately. If a particular evening at the harbor is important, plan around the date and check the program for your travel period. For hiking, first choose between the 18 km route to the bay’s northern shore and the circular trail along both coasts, which can be extended with a detour into the village.
