Artists’ residences, candy making in front of an audience and a named smoked-fish specialty offer several specific ways to experience Svaneke. The church’s location on the southeastern edge of town, a bathing area at the harbor and a circular walking route in nearby Listed add to the picture. If you are looking for accommodation in Svaneke, these differences can help you choose what to focus on: art and craftsmanship, local specialties or time outdoors.
Artistic work and distinctive locations
Svanekegaarden has three artists’ residences for artists working there. This is a direct link to artistic work in Svaneke. Svaneke Church stands on the southeastern edge of the town on Bornholm, about 18 meters above sea level. Its location and the artists’ residences offer two different points of interest if you are interested in culture and the townscape: one is a place for working artists, the other a church in a precisely described location.
You can experience craftsmanship firsthand at Bolcheriet on Svaneke Torv, where handmade candies are made in front of visitors. Unlike a visit focused primarily on a building or place, here the making itself takes center stage. A bathing area with diving platforms at one, two and three meters has also been set up at Svaneke harbor. If you plan to visit during your stay, check in advance whether the area will be accessible when you are there.
A walk in nearby Listed
For time outdoors, another option is the approximately 3.3-kilometer circular route, Sporet i Listed, in the vicinity of Svaneke. It leads from the small fishing village through the forest, along the VaseĂĄ and out into the open countryside. The route is in Listed, not Svaneke. Its sequence of village, forest, riverbank and open countryside is clearly different from the individual cultural and craft locations in Svaneke. This makes it possible to choose between a visit to town and a walk based on the landscapes along the way, rather than on an assumed walking time.
A specialty from Svaneke Røgeri
There is also a specific point of interest for local cuisine: the house specialty at Svaneke Røgeri is called “Solstrejf over Svaneke.” Whether it is on the menu when you visit may vary. Together with the candy making, this gives you a choice between two different experiences: a craft process visitors can watch and a named specialty whose availability on the menu may vary.
Bornholm: more cultural and landscape highlights
Bornholm has other destinations, each with its own theme. Bornholm’s first smokehouse opened in Gudhjem in 1866, and herring has been smoked there ever since. Hasle Smokehouse is the last smokehouse on Bornholm where fish is smoked in the traditional way, using open chimneys and alder wood. These two places represent the island’s smoking tradition, while Svaneke’s named house specialty offers a distinct local point of interest.
For other interests, Bornholm has the NaturBornholm experience center, with dinosaurs, live crocodiles, an aquarium and a bison exhibition. The exhibits may change. Bornholm’s Medieval Centre is a 15-hectare open-air museum that brings 14th-century Bornholm to life in an engaging, interactive way. Ekkodalen, Bornholm’s largest rift valley, lies in Almindingen. Bornholm’s range of themes thus extends from smoking traditions and the Middle Ages to exhibitions and landscapes.
