The Helligpeder Cycling Route runs through Muleby. Nearby, you’ll also find hiking trails, a recreational forest and traces of the brickmaking industry. When choosing a holiday rental in Muleby, you can plan a stay that balances cycling trips, walks and a look at the area’s industrial history.

Forest Trails and Industrial History

Kilen is a recreational forest close to town, mainly used as a local recreation area for Muleby. The Klavsemølle-dæmningen, a road or transport embankment, is located there. It was built and used to transport materials to and from the disused brickworks. The area is designated a national industrial heritage site. Here, the forest and industrial history are part of the same local story, though they offer different experiences: the embankment tells of the area’s former use, while the trails through the plantation lead into the landscape.

A yellow-marked hiking trail starts at the Naturindgangen on Rosmannevej and leads through the quieter parts of Blykobbe Plantation. Along the way, it passes Tillehøjene, Bavnehøj, Blykobbe Å, Prinsens Kilde and the fortifications in the coastal dunes. Tables and benches are provided at busy spots and selected viewpoints in the plantation. As route conditions can change, it is recommended that you check the route before setting out.

Cycling Around Muleby

The Helligpeder Cycling Route runs through Muleby. Further along, it goes from Rønne through open woodland with forest lakes and hidden industrial remnants, as well as through the small villages of Sorthat and Muleby. A municipal cycle path between Rønne and Hasle, which runs through Blykobbe Plantation, is a separate route. This gives you two different route options: one through Muleby itself and another through the nearby plantation.

Lakes and Fishing

Like the nearby Smaragdsø and Rubinsø, Pyritsøen near Sorthat-Muleby was formed in former clay pits. The clay was used by Hasle Klinke- og Chamottestensfabrik to make clinker tiles and firebricks; extraction ended in the late 1980s. The lakes thus preserve a visible connection between the landscape and local industrial history.

Fishing opportunities also vary by location. The coast between Pyritsøen and Levka offers good fishing, including for sea trout. Pyritsøen itself is home to pike and perch; no fishing licence is required to fish in the lake. Check the current fishing regulations before visiting, as local conditions may vary.

Another Activity in the Region

The Natureventyr adventure is also based in Sorthat-Muleby. It tells children a dinosaur story and the mystery of the coal miners’ missing diamonds. As it is an app-based experience, it is recommended that you check its current availability in advance.
