South Kivu reveals itself through its diverse natural landscapes. Idjwi Island is about 70 kilometers long; its mountainous terrain reaches an elevation of 2,300 meters. The length and elevation describe different aspects of the same island: its extent and its elevation profile. Kahuzi-Biega National Park covers almost 6,000 km² and is located in the provinces of South Kivu, North Kivu and Maniema. Its area and location across three provinces distinguish the national park from Idjwi Island; at the same time, its territory extends beyond South Kivu. The island, mountain landscape and protected area each give the province their own distinctive character.

Mountain ranges and vegetation zones

Itombwe Nature Reserve extends across the Itombwe Massif and the Mitumba Range. The Itombwe Mountains include forests with vegetation ranging from rainforests to grassland formations. This brings two distinct landscape features into focus: the reserve's extent across named mountain ranges and the diversity of vegetation in the forests. For nature enthusiasts, Itombwe is a striking destination both geographically and for its habitats. On Idjwi, the mountainous terrain defines the island's character; in Itombwe, the massif, mountain range and range of vegetation are the most prominent landscape features.

Kahuzi-Biega: wildlife and World Heritage

In addition to gorillas, Kahuzi-Biega National Park is home to forest elephants, chimpanzees, endemic Congo peafowl, okapis and more than 350 bird species. The park is considered the last natural habitat of the eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri), also known as Grauer's gorilla. Species inventories may change as new surveys are carried out. Among the birds, the figure of more than 350 species and the endemic Congo peafowl highlight different aspects: the breadth of the birdlife and a distinctive species within this group. The park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980; this date adds a clear historical reference to the description of its natural features.
