Zelená Hora brings together layers from different periods: a prehistoric hillfort, a stone castle built later, and the eventful history of the village. The landscape is also part of the picture: most of Zelená Hora lies in the summit areas of the Drahanská vrchovina. At Nad Bochtálem, visitors can enjoy a beautiful view of the Haná today.
Hillfort and Stone Castle
The Zelená Hora archaeological area is an important archaeological site. It includes a 1.1-hectare prehistoric hillfort on a triangular promontory above the Pustiměřský potok. A rampart and a ditch fortified the site. Its area, location and fortifications give the hillfort a tangible place in the history of the village.
A stone castle was later built within the same archaeological area. Its construction is dated to the mid-13th century; it was probably abandoned as early as the 14th century. The hillfort and the castle therefore represent different periods and are two distinct historic sites. Those interested in the development of the village will find both a prehistoric fortification and a medieval castle site here.
The Founding and History of the Village
Zelená Hora was officially founded in 1763. Before that, woodcutters had built six houses in a cleared forest, in an area that Bishop Maxmilián, Count Hamilton, had given them. The six houses, the clearing and the grant are all part of the village’s founding story. The date marks the village’s official beginnings; the events described explain the circumstances in which the first houses were built.
The history of the 20th century is marked by a profound rupture: in 1941, the inhabitants of Zelená Hora were forcibly displaced. They returned in 1945, after the Second World War. The two dates mark a turning point and the population’s return; they help tell the history of the village not only as a story of its founding, but also as one of loss and new beginnings.
Nad Bochtálem and Views of the Haná
During the interwar period, two windmills stood at Nad Bochtálem. After the village was displaced in 1941, they were gradually dismantled. Today, Nad Bochtálem offers a beautiful view of the Haná landscape. The place thus connects memories of the former windmills with the landscape as it is experienced today. The windmills belong to the history of the site; the view is what distinguishes Nad Bochtálem today.
A Sandstone Cross in the Village Square
Another historic detail stands in the village square: a sandstone cross dating from 1869. Together with the hillfort, the stone castle and the history of the village, it adds a dated 19th-century structure to the picture of Zelená Hora. The landmarks described here thus range from prehistory to more recent local history, while the view of the Haná adds a distinct connection to the landscape.
