Vážany Nad Litavou lies on the left bank of the Litava stream. Alongside the village’s history and architecture, there are two different ways to explore the surrounding area on a route: a green-marked hiking trail across the Battlefield of Slavkov and a cycling loop that passes through the village. If you are planning a stay, you can consider both cultural history and a specific route option without combining the two routes into a single outing.
The Church and Traces of the Village’s History
The oldest written mention of Vážany Nad Litavou dates to 1287. The Church of St. Bartholomew was originally built in the Romanesque style in the 13th century and restored in 1651. The early history of the village and the building history of the church thus span the same long period, but tell different stories: the date 1287 refers to the mention of the village, while the two dates associated with the church mark its original construction and a later restoration.
There are traces on the church portal that have been linked to two warriors who took part in the Crusades of the 13th century. This cautious attribution is a distinctive detail of the church: it suggests a possible connection to the history of the Crusades without presenting the identity of the people depicted as certain. The Stations of the Cross are also part of the church interior. They were renovated and were open to visitors in 2018. Check their current condition locally before your visit.
A late Baroque statue of St. John of Nepomuk, dating from 1739 and created by Fr. V. Solnický, stands by the church. Outside the village, in the direction of Kobeřice, there is a Baroque wayside shrine dating from 1806. Together with the church, these buildings and works of art represent different historical points of reference, found in Vážany Nad Litavou and on the outskirts of the village. Visitors interested in religious architecture will find not just one building, but several specific historical details, each with its own location and date.
Across the Battlefield on Foot or by Bike
The green tourist route across the Battlefield of Slavkov is about 18 kilometres long and runs exclusively along field tracks. The cycling loop across the battlefield is longer, at 31 kilometres, and follows a different sequence of places: it runs from Slavkov u Brna through Vážany Nad Litavou, then via Hrušky to Křenovice. Comparing the routes helps you make an initial choice based on distance and mode of travel; they are separate routes and should not be combined into a single loop.
The stated surface of the green route is also a specific planning detail: it runs exclusively along field tracks. The cycling loop, by contrast, is described by the sequence of named places it passes through. This makes it easier to decide whether the green-marked route along field tracks or the 31-kilometre connection through Vážany and onwards via Hrušky and Křenovice better suits your plans. The distances alone do not indicate how long the routes take to cycle or walk, so do not treat them as fixed durations.
The tourist route across the battlefield is connected to several railway stops. Check the specific connections and timetables separately for your outward and return journeys. The connection to railway stops does not specify a particular departure time or service frequency. This means visitors face different planning questions: choosing between the two routes depends on the type and length of the route, while planning rail travel means finding a suitable timetable. Vážany Nad Litavou thus offers a historical connection to the area and two clearly distinct route options for planning your trip.
