Křenovice lies three kilometres southwest of Slavkov u Brna, on both sides of the Rakovec stream. There are several ways to explore the village: memorial sites commemorating the Battle of Austerlitz, religious monuments, and cycling routes with clearly different distances and levels of difficulty. You can choose whether to focus mainly on cultural history or select a cycling route that suits you.

Church, Monuments and Austerlitz History

A parish register from the early 19th century describes the Church of St Lawrence as very old. Its features include a sacristy, a choir gallery with a positive organ, and three wooden altars. The monolithic Smírčí kříž is also a striking historical landmark: the stone cross stands beside a field path in Křenovice and is listed as a protected cultural monument. Along with the church, it is considered one of the oldest witnesses to the village’s history. The site offers a lovely view to the north.

A specific connection to the Battle of Austerlitz can be found at House No. 65, the former Spáčil farmstead. It is one of the historic sites on the Austerlitz battlefield. Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov, a Russian general and commander of the Allied forces, spent the night there from 1 to 2 December 1805. A plaque outside the house commemorates his stay. Alongside the historical date, there is therefore a visible memorial in the village.

Another memorial site is Krchůvek, on the Zlatá hora hill. It contains mass graves of soldiers from the Battle of the Three Emperors and of local victims of cholera. The wayside shrine “Boží muka na Široké” adds to the historical landmarks: it was rebuilt in 2005 and consecrated in 2006. At the consecration, 200 years had passed since it was erected and 50 years since it had collapsed.

Cycling Routes with Different Levels of Difficulty

Krchůvek is freely accessible, lies on cycling route No. 5097, and makes a suitable stop on a cycling trip. From there, the view stretches across Křenovice, Slavkov, Šaratice, Hrušky and the Ždánický les; on a clear day, you can also see Pálava and the peaks of the Chřiby hills. Route No. 5097 passes through Křenovice, is 28.5 kilometres long and is rated as moderately difficult. It is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes.

A considerably shorter option is the four-kilometre cycling route No. 5101. It passes through Šaratice, Zbýšov and Křenovice, is rated easy and is suitable for all types of bicycles. The two routes therefore differ in both length and rating: No. 5101 offers a shorter, easy ride, while No. 5097 combines more kilometres with a moderate level of difficulty. You can choose between them based on these stated route features.

Two themed cycling routes also pass through Křenovice: “Po slavkovském bojišti I.” is 31 kilometres long, and “Po slavkovském bojišti III.” is 50 kilometres long. Their lengths clearly show the difference in overall distance. Together with the details for routes No. 5097 and 5101, they offer several ways to plan a cycling trip in Křenovice around your preferred distance and the stated level of difficulty.

Local Festivals and Event Dates

The events calendar offers further reasons to plan a visit to Křenovice around the season and your interests. “Francouzové v Křenovicích” takes place every year in early December, on the anniversary of the Battle of the Three Emperors, in the Austerlitz battlefield area. The local patron saint’s feast, Vavřinecké hody, is usually celebrated on the second Sunday in August.

The cultural calendar also includes the “Pod křenovskó májó” festival, organised annually by the municipality of Křenovice together with the children’s folklore ensemble Křenováček. It began as a regional showcase for ensembles from the Vyškov area. If a festival is a deciding factor in your trip, check the specific event date in advance. When choosing Křenovice as a place to stay, you can also consider whether you would prefer to focus on the historic sites, one of the cycling routes or a visit timed to coincide with a festival.
