Holubice brings together Austerlitz heritage, local architectural history, and recurring village festivals. If you are considering Holubice as a place to stay, two questions offer a good starting point: Would you like to focus on the battlefield, and does your travel period coincide with one of the traditional festivals? This can help you tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.

Battlefield History and Landscape

Holubice lies in a hilly, varied landscape used intensively for agriculture, on the right bank of the Rakovec stream, at the boundary between the Thaya-Svratka Valley and the Upper Moravian Valley. The village is also within the protected heritage zone of the Austerlitz battlefield. The public “Battle of the Three Emperors” educational trail runs through Holubice.

The educational trail explains the significance of the battle and key combat operations on 29 map panels. They show the battle situation, portraits of the commanders, and schematic depictions of key combat operations; the texts also cover the situation on December 2, 1805. Heavy fighting took place in the northern part of the Austerlitz battlefield near the municipalities of Holubice and Kruh. This gives Holubice a direct connection to the history of the battle alongside its broader local history.

Church, Chapel, and Archaeological Finds

The Church of St. Wenceslas was completed on July 14, 1929, and ceremonially opened to the public. Its construction was made possible by fundraising among local residents, with support from local benefactors Cyril Frank, František Brtník, František Frank, and Alois Frank. The date and funding tell two different parts of the building’s story: the recorded completion of the project and the support it received from the community.

An older religious site is the Chapel of St. Gotthard. It dates from the 18th century and stands in a small park on Holubice village square. Archaeological finds add much older traces to these historical connections: rescue excavations associated with the construction of the D1 uncovered a Paleolithic grave and a Lombard cemetery. Jewelry, ceramic vessels, weapons, and various tools were also discovered.

Village Festivals Throughout the Year

Babské hody is a folk tradition held every year in May. It features traditional costumes, a procession through the village accompanied by a brass band, and an evening dance at the cultural center. Svatováclavské hody is regularly held at the end of September in connection with the feast of St. Wenceslas.

Martinské hody is celebrated in November. Its traditional elements include headwear, woolen scarves, and slivovitz, as well as an evening dance with a cimbalom band; program details may vary. At the end of the year, a long-standing Christmas concert tradition takes place at the Church of St. Wenceslas, with a program that may differ from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular festival, check the specific event date in advance. The months provide a seasonal guide, but do not replace the date of the individual edition.
