Different themes for exploration come together in Tvarožná: the landscape of Santon, religious buildings with a long architectural history, and memorial sites related to the Battle of Slavkov. Cycle routes cross the battlefield of the Battle of the Three Emperors and the Brno wine region. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether you want to focus above all on the landscape, architecture, history or cycling.
Santon: Landscape and Traces of 1805
Santon is a rocky steppe on Kulm conglomerates. It covers 0.39 hectares and is home to specially protected plant species. The area provides a concrete sense of scale, while the geology and plant life offer their own ways of experiencing the site.
Remains of trenches dug by French soldiers in 1805 while fortifying Santon can be found there. The location of these field fortifications is part of the Santon Natural Monument. Below Tvarožná, at the confluence of the Tvaroženský potok and the Roketnice, there is also a wetland that provides a habitat for numerous water birds. Thus, the landscape includes both the rocky steppe and a waterside habitat.
Churches and a Chapel with Different Building Phases
The Neo-Gothic parish Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1880–1881 on the site of an earlier church dating from the first half of the 14th century. It is a cultural monument and one of Tvarožná’s prominent architectural landmarks. Its history therefore points to two church-building phases separated by many centuries: the medieval predecessor and the 19th-century Neo-Gothic building.
The pilgrimage Chapel of Panny Marie Sněžné also has an older history. It was built in 1832 on the foundations of a wooden chapel dating from 1700. On its north wall is the Gallery of Military Commanders: the portraits depict commanders who led troops in the area around Santon during the Battle of Slavkov. The chapel thus connects its own architectural history with a depiction of the military leadership around the battlefield.
Memorial Sites Related to the Battle of Slavkov
The diorama of the Battle of Slavkov is on the first floor of the Tvarožná municipal office. The Vienna-based Deutschmeister Schützenkorps group donated it to the municipality in 1990; it was created by Alfred Frühwirth. Another tangible connection to the battle is the Jeannette replica: a copy of a French Gribeauval-type eight-pounder cannon used in the battle.
The educational trail about the Battle of the Three Emperors was created in 2003 by the nonprofit organization Mohyla míru-Austerlitz. It leads to observation points commemorating important locations on the battlefield at the time. The Václav Kosmák Memorial below the church was erected in 1923 by grateful members of the local community. Kosmák was a priest and writer; Kosmákův kříž also commemorates his farewell to local parishioners. This Art Nouveau polychrome wooden cross by Matouš Plotěný was erected in 1893.
Other works of art and memorial objects offer different points of interest: the three Tvaroženské Venuše are bronze sculptures of stylized women by Vladimír Drápal, mounted on concrete pedestals in the central area of the village square. The statue of St. John of Nepomuk, a work by an unknown artist registered as a monument, is also located there by the stream. The former windmill building dates from the third quarter of the 19th century and is locally known as Bahnerův mlýn, or the Bahner Mill.
Cycle Routes and Paths to the Chapel
Cycle routes through Tvarožná include trails across the battlefield of the Battle of the Three Emperors and through the Brno wine region. They offer a different thematic focus from the educational trail, whose observation points commemorate important locations on the battlefield at the time. Paths from the Rohlenka rest house and from Tvarožná end at the Chapel of Panny Marie Sněžné. If you plan to use one of these routes, check the route on site.
When looking for a hotel in Tvarožná, you can use your interests as a starting point: for example, the religious buildings, the history of the battle, or the landscape and cycle routes. This lets you choose where to stay based on the themes you want to shape your visit.
