Medieval castle remains, a partially completed architectural project and trails leading to the hills give Skryje several distinct facets. Rysov represents the history of a feudal seat; the AKA complex, a larger urban development concept from the 20th century. Also among the sights are a protected watermill, a chapel on the former site of Hrádek and natural springs. Cultural history and landscape offer different focal points for a stay.

Rysov: Castle complex with surviving traces

Rysov is a defunct castle in the Skryje area and a cultural monument. The feudal seat was designed as a castle with a keep; it dates from between the late 13th and mid-14th centuries. Traces in the terrain and fragments of walls remain. Rysov is regarded as an archaeological and cultural-historical monument site. The castle can therefore be viewed across two periods: as a former feudal seat and through the traces still visible in the terrain today.

AKA complex: a partially realised concept

Fuchs designed the AKA complex in Skryje as an integrated urban structure. A factory and a settlement of detached houses were planned on the right bank of the river. The concept for the left bank included accommodation, a community hall used as a cinema, and technical infrastructure with a waterworks, bridges and a hydroelectric power station. Construction began between 1937 and 1939 and was only partially completed. The hydroelectric power station was completed in 1942.

The complex’s surviving elements include, in particular, residential buildings, a bridge and a water supply structure. Some buildings may have restricted private access. The AKA complex thus offers a glimpse of a major development project whose plans, implementation and surviving parts do not fully correspond.

Mill and chapel: local building history

The protected watermill Buchalův mlýn is located at house No. 13 in Skryje, on the Bobrůvka, also known as the Loučka. In its present form, it is a fine example of rural Baroque from the early 19th century, while also retaining an older core. The mill therefore highlights the architectural history of a single building, unlike the more broadly planned ensemble of the AKA complex.

A chapel stands on a hill at the site where Hrádek once stood. It offers another connection to Skryje’s older history: a present-day building marks the location of a former structure.

Hiking trails, hills and springs

From the picturesque Bobrovka Valley, numerous hiking trails in the municipality lead practically to every hilltop. A red-marked hiking trail also runs from Skryje in the direction of Šafránkův mlýn. The first description refers to the municipality’s hiking landscape as a whole, while the second identifies a specific marked route from Skryje. As trail conditions can change, check the current route before setting out.

There are several spring wells and natural springs in the area with high-quality water. Some are no longer active due to falling groundwater levels. The springs therefore do not all feature equally in the present-day landscape; groundwater levels affect which ones remain active.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

For bus travel, the terminus in the municipality is a useful point of reference. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable before setting off.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Skryje, you can decide in advance what matters most: are Rysov and architectural history your main interests, or do hiking trails and springs matter more? This can help you choose accommodation to match the themes you want to shape your stay.
