Popovice brings together local history and nature: archaeological finds, sacred art and a memorial provide cultural highlights, while the Pastvisko reservoir and the Farářka wetland add ecological dimensions. If you are considering a holiday rental, you can weigh up your interests in history, nature and travel arrangements.

Monastery history and archaeological finds

An early connection leads to Rajhrad Monastery: in 1048, Prince Břetislav I gave Popovice to the Benedictines for the monastery’s foundation.

The archaeological sites differ in the specific finds discovered there. At U ChebzĹŻ, flint tools, stone axes, and Neolithic sherds and vessels were found. At NĂvky, human skeletal remains were uncovered along with a necklace made of fired-clay beads, on which blue eyes had been painted. The find dates from the Neolithic period between 4500 and 2000 BC. This dating applies to NĂvky, while the finds mentioned at U ChebzĹŻ comprise tools, stone axes and pottery.

Paintings and commemorative culture

The bell tower in Popovice contains a painting of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary by Vojtěch Slouk, a Benedictine monk from Rajhrad. The memorial to those who fell in the First World War is considered the oldest in the entire microregion and was consecrated in 1920 by Abbot Prokop Šup. The two works represent different cultural highlights: sacred art on the one hand and public commemoration on the other.

The subjects also span very different periods: the NĂvky finds date back to the Neolithic, the gift to the Benedictines is recorded in 1048, and the memorial was consecrated in 1920. Archaeological traces, monastery history and commemorative culture can thus be viewed as distinct layers of time.

Nature and routes

The Pastvisko reservoir is used by the local angling club for fish farming and provides a habitat for many animal species, particularly amphibians. Animal species protected under Czech law occur in the Farářka wetland. Their main features differ: at Pastvisko, fish farming and habitat coexist, while Farářka is characterised by the presence of protected species.

The first 15.7 km section of the Rajhradsko educational trail runs through Rajhrad, Popovice and Holasice. This length refers to the section passing through all three places, not to a route entirely within Popovice.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

Popovice can be reached from Brno by train. Check the timetable for your travel date when planning your specific journey. A railway stop was established in 1914; this date adds a historical connection to the information about getting to the village.

If you are looking for a holiday rental in Popovice, you can include the train connection from Brno in your plans if you are travelling by rail. When choosing where to stay, it may also help to consider what you want your visit to focus on: historic traces and sacred art, or the reservoir and wetland.
