Podolí lies on both sides of the Říčka stream, beneath the southern slopes of the Drahanská vrchovina highlands. A natural monument, cultural history, recurring traditions and cycling offer different ways to shape your stay. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether the landscape, heritage, a festival date or cycling should be the deciding factor.

Landscape and Horka

The Horka natural monument in Podolí covers 1.9435 hectares and protects heat-loving steppe communities on Kulm conglomerates. Here, a specific conservation purpose goes hand in hand with a named geological substrate. If you’d like to include nature conservation in your trip, Horka offers a clear focus. It complements Podolí’s cultural themes with a distinct look at habitat protection.

Church, Archaeology and Art

In the centre of Podolí, the Church of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the square; it is also a cultural monument. Its central location makes it a clear landmark in the village. The excavated burial ground adds an archaeological focus: 145 graves were investigated, and the burial ground is one of the largest in Moravia. Archaeology thus broadens the picture beyond the religious building. Art adds another dimension: the artist’s original studio forms the basis of a gallery featuring works by Rudolf Březa. Together, these make up three clearly distinct cultural highlights: a religious building, archaeology and art.

Recurring Traditions

Two recurring traditions offer different dates to plan around. The commemorative event “Napoleonic Fires at Žuráň” takes place every year to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Austerlitz, with uniformed soldiers in attendance. Babské hody, a traditional women’s festival, offers a different focus: it is celebrated in traditional costume on the last Saturday in August. The dates are easy to distinguish when planning your trip: one is tied to the anniversary, the other to the last Saturday in August. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the exact date for the year you want to visit.

Cycling: Pump Track and Cycle Path

The pump track in Podolí is a small circuit with rollers and banked turns. It is used to practise cycling skills and pumping technique. The cycle path offers a different experience: it runs from Podolí to Mariánské údolí, two kilometres away. This gives you two distinct ways to cycle: practise your riding technique on a compact circuit or follow a cycle route to a named destination. Route conditions and accessibility may vary; check the path’s condition before setting out.

Choose a Focus for Your Trip

Two different questions can help you choose when to visit and what to do: would you like to plan your stay around an event date, or focus on a particular type of cycling? The pump track is about riding technique; the cycle path connects to Mariánské údolí. Horka and the cultural attractions offer a different focus.
