Moravské Knínice is a destination for travelers who want to explore nature and culture side by side during their stay. A nature trail, landscapes with different characteristics, historic religious buildings and the annual Markétské hody celebrations offer a range of thematic perspectives. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between these highlights: the nature trail passes local natural features and sights from the area’s history, while each individual place has its own connection to nature or history.
Landscapes with Different Characteristics
The Obůrky-Třeštěnec Nature Monument lies within the cadastral area of Moravské Knínice and covers approximately 2.63 hectares. Its main feature is a community of wet meadows on the floor of a permanently waterlogged hollow; numerous significant plant and animal species are protected there. U Kaple-Stráňky is another ecologically significant landscape feature and a local biocentre. It covers 2.5 hectares and lies 500 metres south of Moravské Knínice, below the Chapel of Sts. Cyril and Methodius.
Čihadlo also has its own character: most of it consists of an extensively grassed cherry orchard. Mokré louky za střelnicí preserves the last fragment of the original semi-cultivated meadows in the Kuřim area and the wider surroundings of Brno. The differences between the areas described are specific: wet meadows in a waterlogged hollow, a landscape feature with biocentre status, a cherry orchard and a surviving fragment of meadow. Those interested in landscapes and nature conservation will find several different themes here, rather than a single, uniform natural setting.
Church, Chapels and Local History
The Church of St. Margaret was built in 1366, providing a specific date for the history of the village. The Chapel of Sts. Cyril and Methodius stands south of Moravské Knínice on a hill beside the road to Písky. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk offers another landmark: it stands at the corner of Kuřimská and U Jánečka streets, on the Class II state highway in the direction of Kuřim.
Cultural themes also include the Markétské hody, an annual tradition of costumed celebrations for the feast of St. Margaret. Two distinct aspects therefore sit side by side: the architectural history of the church and a recurring local festival tradition. Together with the chapels, they offer a historical perspective on Moravské Knínice, without implying that the individual places are interchangeable.
Nature Trail, Swimming Spot and Getting Around
The Moravské Knínice nature trail has nine stops and passes local natural features and sights from the area’s history. It follows a blue-marked hiking route from the central bus stop to the pond below the chapel. The stops, trail markings and two endpoints give the route a clear structure and highlight its combination of nature and history.
The pond Pod kaplí is designated as a natural swimming spot; swimming is at your own risk. If you plan to swim there, keep this restriction in mind. For getting around the village, there is a bus stop on Kuřimská Street near Knínický hostinec, served by IDS-JMK line 312. Check the current timetable before travelling. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk at the corner of Kuřimská and U Jánečka streets is another specific landmark on the road towards Kuřim.
