A 5.5-kilometre cycling route and the history of Stará Pošta give you two specific reasons to visit Kovalovice. In the village, you’ll find a historic post station connected with the Battle of Austerlitz, marked cycling routes and leisure facilities such as the natural swimming biotope and multi-purpose court. You can tailor your stay to your interests, whether that means history, cycling or relaxation.

Cycling with clear directions

Cycling route No. 5136 runs through Kovalovice between Pozořice and Velešovice. It follows Class III roads and is 5.5 kilometres long. Two marked cycling routes pass through the village: one heads north towards the Moravian Karst, while the other goes south to the protected area of the Battle of Austerlitz battlefield. Route 5136 specifies its length and road class, while the two directions point you towards the areas they lead to. Check the signs locally before setting out on a marked route.

Post station history and historic sites

Stará Pošta is a preserved historic post station. It was established in 1785 as a relay station between Brno and Vyškov and is directly connected with the Battle of Austerlitz. Visitors can see the restored interiors and a small museum exhibition. As visitor services may change, check which visits are currently available before you go.

Two chapels also tell of different periods in the village’s history. The Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul stands on the site of a former bell tower dating from 1826. The so-called Ruská kaplička is located in the Stará Pošta area. It is said to have been built in 1851, after the Napoleonic Wars, by a Russian noblewoman. One or two of her relatives, officers of the Russian nobility, are believed to be buried there. The chapel was repaired in 1995.

The former fortress complex, dating from the mid-16th century, was later used as a manor farm, a school and an inn. Today it houses the Na Tvrzi restaurant and a cultural centre. If you’d like to visit the restaurant or cultural centre, check their current visitor status in advance.

Natural swimming biotope, sports and Potočiny

The natural swimming biotope has a children’s pool and a beach volleyball court. It is about 700 metres from the Kovalovice municipal office. Follow the signs or the yellow tourist trail to reach the biotope. As facilities may change, check what is currently available before your visit.

You can play tennis, nohejbal, volleyball, small-sided football and basketball on the multi-purpose court. The municipality may update the court rules, so check the current requirements before using it.

The Potočiny water reservoir was built in 1987 and 1988 for sports and recreation. Fishing competitions have been held there annually since 1995. If you’re travelling to take part in a competition, check the latest dates locally. You should also confirm the specific fishing rules on site.

Traditions with their own dates

The Petropavlovské hody is a recurring tradition in Kovalovice that includes a traditional field Mass. If you’re planning your trip around the festival, confirm the current date locally in advance.
