Babice nad Svitavou can be explored through two defining themes: its karst landscape with distinctive landforms and the history of the parish church. Several named hiking destinations offer different points of reference, from a spring to viewpoints. The routes described start in different places and should not be understood as a single route.
Karst Landscape and Distinctive Landforms
The Babická plošina lies in the central part of the Moravian Karst. It covers about 9 square kilometres and lies at an average elevation of around 500 metres above sea level; around 20 caves are known there. The entrance to Babická jeskyně lies above the Babice–Kanice road and just a few metres below the surface of the plateau. Open landforms and underground karst features are therefore among the area’s defining geological themes.
The Čihadlo Nature Reserve protects natural deciduous forests on Devonian limestone and loess deposits, as well as above-ground and underground karst features. At the Čihadlo geological site, a hiking trail leads from the Kanice–Babice road through limestone and uphill to the Babická plošina. From the higher rocks, there are views of the relief of the Brno Massif and the Svitava Valley. Landscape protection, the geological trail and the viewpoint offer different reasons to explore the area.
Malá Macocha lies on the northwestern edge of Babice nad Svitavou and is a disused iron ore mine. Today, the site consists of three interconnected depressions about 8 metres deep. The mine was excavated through several relatively narrow, vertical shafts to a depth of about 42 metres. The depressions describe the present-day landform; the shafts belong to the history of mining. Together, these make Malá Macocha a distinct geological and mining-history topic.
Hiking Destinations and Viewpoints
A green-marked gravel path leads directly from Babice nad Svitavou to Alexandrova rozhledna. The observation tower is freely accessible year-round; check local conditions before your visit. The stone tower replaced a wooden viewing pavilion in 1887. The route and the building’s history thus offer two different points of interest for visitors: the path to the viewpoint and the tower’s development.
A blue-marked hiking trail runs along the edge of the Čihadlo Nature Reserve to Srnčà studánka. A municipal hiking tip from an earlier period, however, starts at the Parish Church of St John the Baptist and follows the green-marked route towards the nature reserve. As this is a historical hiking tip, it is advisable to check trail conditions before setting out. These route descriptions differ mainly in their stated destinations and starting points.
A hiking trail to the ÄŚihadlo geological site leads from the Kanice–Babice road through limestone to the Babická plošina; from higher rocks, views extend to the Brno Massif and the Svitava Valley. The BabickĂ© studánky hiking tip passes the Skalky viewpoint, from where Babice nad Svitavou can be seen. Babická vyhlĂdka can be reached by the forest path connecting the Babice nad Svitavou railway stop with the village. No marked hiking trail leads to the viewpoint.
Parish Church and Local History
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist dates from 1448. Its core is Gothic; in 1765, the church was remodelled in the Baroque style. Since 1996, it has been listed as an immovable cultural monument in the Brno-venkov District under registration number 0643. These features tell the story of several building phases: both the Gothic core and the later Baroque remodelling form part of the church’s present-day historical character.
Babice nad Svitavou was first mentioned in writing in 1365. Together with the history of the church, this offers a local perspective on the village’s history, from its first written mention through the building’s history to its status as a monument. For planning, you can consider the themes separately: karst and views, routes to the spring and viewpoints, or the village’s architectural heritage.
