Goldenkron has a clearly defined character: its Gothic monastery complex stands beside the Vltava, shaped both by historic waterworks and by its use today. The final section of the Fritsch Trail also ends in the town. This makes Goldenkron a blend of architecture, art history and river scenery. You can therefore plan your visit around the aspect that interests you most: monastic culture, a walking route with views of the landscape, or the history and use of the water.

Monastery, Art and Local History

The Cistercian monastery of Zlatá Koruna was founded in 1263 in connection with the Bohemian king Přemysl Otakar II. The complex is considered one of the most valuable collections of Gothic architecture in Central Europe. Goldenkron thus combines a specific founding story with architecture whose significance extends beyond the local area.

Visual art also provides a distinct point of reference in time: the Zlatokorunská Madonna was painted between 1410 and 1420 and was probably commissioned directly for the Cistercian monastery in Zlatá Koruna. The date of its creation is narrowed down to this period, while the direct commission is explicitly considered probable. The Baroque monastery pharmacy was exhibited in the former kitchen. Its exhibition included more than 1,000 pharmacy vessels, laboratory glassware and herbal medicines.

The historic centre of Goldenkron is a protected conservation area. Alongside the importance of the monastery’s architecture, the town centre therefore has its own protected status. Visitors interested in history will find several different points of entry here: the monastery’s origins, a work of art dated to a specific period, and the protected historic fabric of the centre.

A remarkable feature of the monastery complex is the Kapucínka lime tree. It stands in the main inner courtyard beside the Chapel of the Guardian Angels, is almost 30 metres tall and is estimated to be 400 years old. The tree adds its own local history to the architecture, anchored to a specific spot in the courtyard.

Landscape and Waterworks

The protected-area designation broadens the view beyond individual buildings: the entire cadastral area of Goldenkron lies within the Blanský les Protected Landscape Area. The conservation area and landscape protection refer to different spatial levels: the historic town centre on the one hand, and the entire cadastral area on the other.

Another waterworks feature is the artificial Jordánek Canal. It is three kilometres long and still exists today. Its artificial character and length add a different dimension to the water theme than the Vltava and its use as a river.

The historic weir and a small hydropower plant also remain in operation near Goldenkron. Canoeists and raftsmen use the lock. Historic waterworks therefore sit alongside a clearly stated present-day use of the river. This offers a distinct perspective on the town, complementing its monastic history and protected landscape.

The Fritsch Trail and Choosing Your Focus

If you would also like to include a walking route in your plans, the Fritsch Trail runs along the left bank of the Vltava, offering views of the river and landscape before reaching Goldenkron. Its final, seven-kilometre section ends in the town. This distance refers specifically to that last stretch, providing a concrete guide to this part of the trail.

The distinctions are useful when choosing between cultural and landscape themes: the monastery complex, the Madonna and the conservation area offer historical points of interest, while the Fritsch Trail adds a route with views of the river and landscape. The information about the weir, lock and canal, in turn, draws attention to the history and use of the waterworks. This lets you shape your stay around the themes that interest you most, without combining the different sights and activities into a single itinerary.
