Holubovska Basta lies on the shore of the Dehtář recreational pond and is a preserved traditional South Bohemian settlement. It consists of a group of secluded farmsteads between the Dehtář and Posměšek ponds. This brings together two perspectives: its location between the ponds and its direct connection to the shore of Dehtář. If you choose your trip based on landscape and traditional village structure, the place offers tangible points of interest for both.
Dehtář and the lakeside landscape
Swimming in a natural setting is possible at Dehtář. Water quality can vary seasonally; if swimming is important to your travel plans, check the latest information in advance. This allows you to take the lakeside location realistically into account when planning. The pond is also part of a cycling route that runs along the dam, and a landmark on the “Kolem Dehtáře” tour: after crossing a stream, the route climbs uphill, from where there is a view of the entire pond. This tour therefore focuses on a specific ascent and the view.
Preserved architectural and village history
Holubovska Basta is home to a preserved granary with a gate dating from the 16th century. There is also an 18th-century wayside shrine with a niche. The year 1816 is inscribed on one of the houses. These three features differ in both type and date: a granary, a shrine and a date inscription on a house. If you are interested in local history, you can compare different forms of the preserved architectural heritage rather than getting to know the place through just one building.
The municipality of Čakov adds another historical point of interest. The Church of St Linhart in Čakov is a cultural monument and is mentioned in 1343. Its main altar features Late Gothic carved figures from 1520. This provides a different focus from the heritage in Holubovska Basta: here, the emphasis is on the early mention of a church and the art on its altar. If you are comparing architectural and art history, you can explore both different periods and different types of historical evidence.
Comparing cycling routes and tours
The circular cycling route “Jihočeským venkovem za barokem do Holašovic” is 46 kilometres long. It passes Holubovska Basta and runs along the dam of Dehtář pond. The route alternates between asphalt, gravel and stone paths. Both the distance and the surface are useful points of reference for planning; conditions can vary seasonally. As the exact route should be checked before setting off, it is worth consulting the route details shortly before you start.
The “Kolem Dehtáře” tour offers a different landscape focus: after crossing a stream, the route climbs to a point from which the whole pond can be seen. While the circular cycling route has a set distance and a variety of surfaces, this tour focuses on the progression from stream to climb to a view across the water. Another route, “Do Holašovic za selským barokem z Hluboké”, also passes Holubovska Basta. These different connections to the place help you distinguish between a longer circular cycling route, a tour with a described viewpoint and a route that passes the settlement.
Finding your way around
This is also useful for finding your way around: the second part of Holubovska Basta can be reached via a turn-off near Záboří. Together with its location on Dehtář, its preserved architectural heritage and the routes described here, this gives you a picture of a place where the pond landscape and village history are equally important.
