When planning a trip to Kunratice, nature, cultural history and a November date all feature. Kunratický les covers nearly 300 hectares; on the “Exkurze do Kunratického lesa” program, a forester leads a 120-minute walk through the forest. Nový hrad, with construction dating back to the Middle Ages, provides a historical point of reference, while the Church of St. James the Elder has its High Baroque form. The Velká Kunratická takes place in November. Which themes you prioritize depends on your interests and travel dates.

Forest and protected stream section

Kunratický les covers nearly 300 hectares and lies within the cadastral districts of Krč, Michle, Kunratice and Chodov. Kunratice is therefore one of the four cadastral districts within which the forest lies. The protected section of the Kunratický potok stream extends from kunratický Horní mlýn to the Labuť pond. The protected status applies to this named stretch, not to the entire stream as a whole. The forest is described by its area, while the stream section is defined by its two endpoints; together, these details refer to two different spatial scales. Converted, this amounts to nearly three square kilometers of forest across the four districts named above.

Excursion and November date

The “Exkurze do Kunratického lesa” program is a 120-minute outdoor excursion led by a forester through Kunratický les. For your day’s itinerary, the stated duration is two hours. You can submit a booking inquiry; confirm availability before your trip.

The Velká Kunratická takes place on the second Sunday of November each year in Kunratický les in Prague. The event has been held without interruption since 1934. Here, the calendar matters more than the duration: check the exact date and event logistics for the year you want. Unlike the two-hour excursion, the right travel period for this event is determined by the Sunday in November.

History from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period

Construction of Nový hrad began in 1411 at the behest of King Wenceslaus IV. To this day, only the palace’s foundations and remains of the siege camp have survived. The construction history thus offers two distinct points of reference: the start date places the project in time, while the surviving parts describe what remains today. The Church of St. James the Elder in Kunratice represents a later period. It was extensively rebuilt between 1730 and 1736 and acquired its present High Baroque form. The historical comparison therefore spans from the start of construction in the early 15th century to an extensive renovation in the 18th century. At Nový hrad, the focus is on limited remains; at St. James, it is on the church’s form shaped by the rebuilding.
