At the centre of Sušice stands the Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. A former school is now used as a kindergarten; meadow habitats and historical references to land ownership add to the picture of the village. This gives visitors several specific points of interest: architectural and local history, recurring religious events, and a landscape that contrasts with the intensively farmed surrounding area.
Chapel, school and local events
The chapel was built in 1935 on the site of a former bell tower. The history of the building site is also part of the village’s past, as a bell tower previously stood there. Services are held there regularly for Sušické hody on the Sunday around 2 July and on 4 November. The July and November dates offer different possible travel windows; exact service times may vary. If your trip coincides with one of these dates, check the exact start time in advance. The former General School building, constructed in 1896, is still used as a kindergarten. The history of the school and its present-day community function come together in the same building.
Land ownership and settlement history
Historical references to land ownership include several different transactions. A farmstead in Sušice is mentioned in the founding charter of a monastery in Olomouc; Jan ze Sušice held a local fortress and the village of Sušice; Margrave Jošt bought Radslavice and Sušice and subsequently sold them to the Olomouc chapter. A publication on settlement in the municipal area from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages is available free of charge at the municipal office. It complements the individual references to ownership with a broader view of settlement in the area across several periods. If you wish to collect the publication, check the municipal office’s opening hours in advance.
Meadows, memorial tree and landscape
The meadow habitats in the Sušice–Pochylec and Kudlov localities have above-average biological value compared with the surrounding intensively farmed landscape. A description updated in 2006 identifies a small-leaved lime tree on the southwestern edge of Sušice as a memorial tree; its age was estimated at around 400 years. For the lime tree, the focus is on its designation as a memorial tree and its estimated age; for the meadows, it is the comparison of their biological value with the surrounding farmland.
When to visit and what to focus on
For planning purposes, the dates and themes offer different options: the recurring services provide a time-specific reason to visit, while the land ownership history, publication and landscape offer points of interest. If you are planning an overnight stay in Sušice, you can decide whether to time your trip around Sušické hody or focus on local history and the landscape.
Cycle route planning
A project envisaged the construction of the second section of the regionally important “Jantarová stezka” cycle route, which was to connect Radslavice and Sušice.
