Several distinct themes come together for a cultural stay in Přestavlky: the castle and its park, the Church of St Peter and Paul, and the remains of the fortress at Švédské šance, situated on a hill above the town. The Přestavlcký les adds a diverse woodland landscape to these cultural sites. This lets you shape your stay around architectural history, sacred architecture, military history or woodland nature.
Castle and park: architecture and design
Přestavlky Castle is a listed cultural monument in the Czech Republic. It is a rectangular, two-storey building with four wings. A prominent four-sided tower defines the complex; its roof design includes a hipped roof, an onion dome and a lantern. The building’s articulated layout and its distinctive tower thus stand out as two different architectural elements.
The castle park is also a listed cultural monument in the Czech Republic. Its main compositional axis is a lime-tree avenue, which gives the park a clear design line. A grotto with a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes has also been preserved there. The avenue and the grotto thus bring together landscape design and a religious motif.
Church and the history of Švédské šance
The Church of St Peter and Paul dates from the first half of the 14th century and is mentioned as a parish church as early as 1384. Its rectangular nave is complemented by a narrower choir with a three-sided apse; the sacristy is on the south side. This layout offers an architectural focus distinct from the castle and park. Visits to the church are possible by arrangement and during services. Arrange a visit in advance.
At Švédské šance, the focus is on historical traces in the landscape: the remains of the ramparts and ditches of a former fortress have been preserved on the hill above Přestavlky. Švédské šance is also a listed cultural monument in the Czech Republic. In 1643, the site served as a stronghold for the Swedish troops of General L. Torstenson. While the castle’s architectural form directs attention to history, Švédské šance combines preserved fortification remains with a specific military-historical connection.
Woodland landscape and getting there
The Přestavlcký les is a continuous woodland complex with a mosaic of Pannonian and Carpathian oak-hornbeam forests, along with small areas of species-rich beech forest and ash-alder floodplain forest. Its elevation ranges from 250 metres above sea level at Dobrčický rybník to 345 metres above sea level at a forest spur above Salaš beneath Holý kopec. The different forest communities thus complement the town’s cultural and historical themes with a distinctive natural perspective.
