Oplocany can be explored through concrete traces of local and cultural history. Sacred art and buildings stand alongside an early settlement history and the former use of the OplocanskĂ˝ Mill. A watercourse is also located in the south of the municipality. If you like to understand a place through its different historical and landscape connections, Oplocany offers several clearly distinct themes for doing so.

Watercourse and landscape connections

The VikliÄŤka crosses the cadastral area of Oplocany in the south of the municipality. This makes the watercourse a clear landscape reference point alongside the cultural details of the village. For your travel decision, the two themes can offer different emphases: the VikliÄŤka anchors the landscape geographically, while the buildings can be understood through their art, location and repair history. If you weigh landscape against culture when choosing a destination, you can consider these aspects of Oplocany separately.

Sacred art and repairs

The sandstone statue of St. Florian is listed as a cultural monument and was restored in recent years. The Baroque work dates from the mid-18th century; it was probably created by the Moravian sculptor and stucco artist Gottfried Fritsche from TovaÄŤov. For travelers interested in sacred art, the statue brings together its material, period, restoration and a tentative attribution to an artist.

Oplocany’s bell tower stands in the village square; its repair in 2015 was supported by the Czech Ministry for Regional Development. The Chapel of St. Ernest (sv. Arnošta) in Oplocany was repaired as part of a project for 2024–2025, co-funded by the Czech Ministry of Agriculture. The two repair projects therefore differ both in timing and in the ministry that supported them. Compared with the statue of St. Florian, the emphasis here is on location and repair history, rather than material and attribution to an artist.

Traces of the past

A human settlement existed near the Valová River in Oplocany around 2500 BC; the first written mention of the village dates to 1131. These two dates offer different historical perspectives: one concerns early settlement, the other the written record of the village. The long span of time shows that the first written mention does not mark the beginning of human settlement.

Another perspective on local economic history leads to the former Oplocanský Mill. A cooperative dairy began operating in its former building on 15 November 1909; from 1936, Tvarůžky cheese was also made there. The dates mark two milestones: dairy operations began in 1909, and Tvarůžky production was added from 1936. The building’s history thus connects cooperative milk processing with the later production of a specific product. If you are interested in former local food production as well as art and architectural history, this offers another perspective on Oplocany.
