The covered wooden bridge over the Jizera has a practical purpose today: it is once again open to the public and serves as an important transport link for the comparatively remote municipality of Bystrá nad Jizerou. There are also hiking and cycling trails through the village, as well as views from the surrounding hills and slopes.
The Wooden Bridge over the Jizera
The bridge was built as a suspension bridge in 1922 and is a technical cultural monument. It spans the Jizera at the boundary with Benešov u Semil. In this way, it connects a specific piece of local history with its role in everyday life: the bridge continues to serve its original purpose and is an important transport link for the municipality.
The municipality describes it as the only surviving and operational bridge of its kind in Europe. This classification comes from the municipality itself. In any case, the structure offers visitors a special perspective on the connection between engineering, historical heritage and public use.
Chalets and the History of the Village
The first written mention of Bystrá nad Jizerou dates from 1320. The older building stock includes numerous well-preserved 19th-century chalets, typical of the foothills of the Giant Mountains. Most are still inhabited; some are used as holiday homes. Alongside the bridge, these houses offer another glimpse into local architectural history.
The volunteer fire brigade is also part of village life. Founded in 1893, it remains active and plays an important role in cultural life. The first fire station, built in 1907, houses an exhibition on the history of the local fire brigade. If you would like to visit, check in advance whether visits are possible.
After the First World War, the sports club erected a war memorial, where commemorative ceremonies are held annually. Clubs and the municipal administration also organize football, fire brigade and other sports competitions. Cultural events include balls, children’s carnival, Children’s Day, theatre performances and the burning of the witches. Specific dates vary: if an event is important to your trip, check its date.

The two routes offer different experiences: the hiking trail focuses on the connection between the places mentioned and its route through Bystrá; the cycling route places the village on the connection between Bohemian Paradise and the Giant Mountains. For those interested in horse riding, Ranch Bystra works with both beginners and advanced riders. A riding circuit on the 20-hectare enclosed grounds runs through the forest and across pastures with livestock. If horse riding is part of your plans, arrange your visit directly with the ranch.
