A viewpoint at 787 metres, a river running through the town, and traces of its textile and industrial history give Velké Hamry a diverse character. The town lies on the southeastern edge of the Jizera Mountains, and the Kamenice flows through it. If you would like to combine nature and culture during your stay, you will find a variety of themes to include in your plans—from rocky viewpoints to technical exhibits.

Landscape and viewpoints

Muchov has been developed as a natural viewpoint. From its 787-metre summit, you can see the Jizera Mountains, the Krkonoše Mountains, the Ještěd Ridge and the Bohemian Paradise. Its distinctive rocks are made of two-mica granite, also known as Tanvald granite. The local name therefore refers to the rock that gives the formations their character.

Another viewpoint is Terezínka. It can be reached from the Kamenice Valley, and 55 steps lead up to it. From the top, you can see the ridges of the Jizera Mountains. In comparison, Muchov offers views in several directions across a number of named landscapes, while the description of Terezínka particularly highlights the views of the Jizera Mountain ridges and the steps leading up to it.

Routes between the towns

A walking trail leads from Svárov through Parýz to Rejdice. The route follows the Ješkrabec stream, whose valley is also called Parýz. If you are planning to walk to Tanvald, you can choose between two options: via Popelnice or through the forest above the railway line via Marjánka. Both avoid heavy road traffic. As conditions may change seasonally, check the current trail conditions before setting out.

These connections give your planning a clear framework: on the way to Rejdice, Svárov, Parýz and the Ješkrabec Valley are the reference points; for Tanvald, there are two different corridors to choose from. The information does not specify a walking time or distance. When choosing, therefore, first consider your destination and the route you would like to take.

Cultural landmarks and industrial history

The late Baroque Chapel of St Wenceslas stands in Velké Hamry II, where the main road branches off towards Muchov. It dates from the 18th century and is one of the town’s preserved historic landmarks. In Mezivodí, a life-size Pietà ensemble evokes folk religious art: it stands among chestnut trees opposite the factory. The Pietà is considered a culturally valuable monument of a folk character and is listed as an immovable cultural monument.

Another monument commemorates the 1870 Svárov textile workers’ strike. It was erected in 1963 and is protected as a cultural monument. Together with the history of the spinning mill, it points to the area’s industrial past. Construction of the spinning mill in Mezivodí, formerly Liebigovy závody, began in 1907; operations started in 1908. The building has retained its original appearance.

Older place names also tell part of this story: Hamersko, Dolení Hamr and Hoření Hamr are probably derived from iron hammers that stood there in the 13th and 14th centuries. The names link local development to the likely role of iron hammers as early as the Middle Ages.

Other architectural details include a two-storey corner house near the square. It has an L-shaped floor plan and gabled roofs. Another striking feature is a shallow, tower-like, two-storey oriel on volute brackets, topped with a sheet-metal onion dome.

Energy Museum and religious services

The Energy Museum is located on the grounds of the Miček carpentry workshop, Bohdalovice 79, Velké Hamry–Mezivodí. Exhibits include a Francis boiler turbine with a generator from 1907, a model biogas plant, and various turbines and generators shown in cutaway form. The programme also includes practical demonstrations of renewable energy generation and educational programmes for schools. If you would like to plan your visit around a demonstration or programme, check the latest schedule in advance.

Christmas and Easter services are held annually in the Chapel of St Anne. On 5 July, a service is held in memory of Jan Hus; an annual Christmas concert by a children’s choir is also held. Services are regularly celebrated in the Church of St Wenceslas. If religious events are important to your plans, check the current schedule of services and concerts before your trip.

The viewpoints, trails and historic sites offer different ways to explore what interests you: Muchov and Terezínka are known for their views, the walking routes help you find your way between the places mentioned, and the monuments and museum showcase cultural and technical history. This makes it easy to link your search for accommodation in Velké Hamry with the themes you would like to explore during your stay.
