Tanvald combines hikes to named viewpoints with a historic cog railway and the trail routes at Tanvaldský Špičák. When planning a stay, it helps to consider what you would like to focus on: marked trails, distinctive viewpoints, the railway or the bike park. The tours described here differ not only in their destinations but also in their routes.

Hiking from Tanvald to Viewpoints

“Kolem Tanvaldu” is a circular route from the stop in Tanvald via the Špičák saddle, Desná, Světlá, Šulíkova skála and Svárov, returning to the Tanvald stop. The hike “Za jizerskohorským duchem Muhu” follows a different route: it also begins in Tanvald and leads via Terezínka and Černá Studnice. This gives you a choice between a tour explicitly described as a circular route and a route with named intermediate destinations.

Another outing, “Kolem Terezínky,” leads to places with views of Tanvald, the Jizera Mountains and the Bohemian Paradise. Terezínka itself is a masonry viewpoint with steps on the slope of Mount Muchov. It is easily reached from Tanvald via a red-marked hiking trail. If you want to walk to the Tanvaldský Špičák lookout tower, you can use marked hiking trails from Tanvald, Dolní Smržovka, Albrechtice or Jiřetín pod Bukovou.

Viewpoints with a History of Their Own

The Tanvaldský Špičák lookout tower is an 18-metre-high stone tower dating from 1909. From here, the panoramic view extends across the Jizera Mountains to the Czech and Polish parts of the Krkonoše Mountains. Terezínka offers a different experience: the viewpoint is on a 15-metre-high rock, which Johann Mayer fitted with a masonry structure and a railing in 1853. The Fanterova skála rock viewpoint on Tanvaldský Špičák was opened to visitors in 1889.

These viewpoints offer different ways to take in the scenery: the stone tower with its wide panorama, the steps at the Terezínka rock viewpoint and the historic opening of Fanterova skála to visitors. The sites are also included in different tours. When choosing, it is therefore worth considering whether you would rather follow a named hiking route or make a viewpoint a destination in its own right.

Cog Railway and Bike Park

The Tanvald–Kořenov–Harrachov cog railway line is another attraction in its own right. It has been in operation since 1902 and is considered the steepest railway in the Czech Republic. The line runs year-round. If you would like to include a ride in your stay, check the timetable for your visit.

At Tanvaldský Špičák, the bike park has about 12 kilometres of single-track, unpaved trails. They lead from the summit down to the cable car’s valley station. The available trails may change, so check the latest bike park information before making plans. These trail routes are clearly distinct from the hikes and viewpoints described above.

Cultural Monument in the Ĺ umburk District
