The history of railways is a defining thread running through Bad Wurzelsdorf (Kořenov): the Tanvald–Kořenov–Harrachov cog railway is the steepest railway line in the Czech Republic. The area also has viewpoints, religious buildings and the district of Jizerka, with its own cultural and natural attractions. You can choose what to focus on depending on whether you are especially interested in railways and technology, architecture or outdoor activities.
Railways and technology in Kořenov
The Kořenov Railway Museum displays historical railway exhibits, photographic documentation and technical equipment related to the operation of the cog railway. It is located in the right-hand part of the former Kořenov station building and can be accessed from the platform. This makes it possible to explore the history of the line not only through its route, but also through its photographs and technical objects.
Rides on historic railcars offer a different perspective. On board, you can learn about the work of the train driver and hear information about the Tanvald–Kořenov–Harrachov line. The rides operate seasonally; check the dates before your trip if you would like to include this experience. The museum and the ride have different focuses: one centres on exhibits and photographic documentation, while the other centres on the journey and information about the line.
Views and trails around Štěpánka
Štěpánka is the oldest observation tower in the Jizera Mountains. From the centre of Kořenov, a hiking trail marked blue at first and then green leads to the tower over a distance of approximately two kilometres. The route is accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Check the trail markings and access conditions on site.
From Štěpánka, you can see across the western Krkonoše, the surroundings of the Souš Reservoir, Mount Jizera and the valleys of the Desná and Kamenice rivers. Which of these landscapes are visible depends on the weather. The observation tower thus combines a specific hiking destination with far-reaching views across several named landscapes—a different focus from the technical details of the railway line.
Jizerka: heritage and activities
Jizerka is a district of Kořenov and has been a village conservation area since 1995. The old schoolhouse houses a museum that serves as a starting point if you would like to learn about the history and natural riches of Jizerka and the Jizera Mountains. The district offers opportunities for hiking and mountain biking, as well as cross-country skiing in winter. Conditions for activities may vary depending on the season.
The attractions within the destination therefore have different focuses: Jizerka combines heritage with outdoor activities, while the railway attractions focus primarily on technology, the line and historic rides. When choosing when to travel, pay particular attention to the seasonal railcar rides and the opportunity to go cross-country skiing, which is specifically mentioned for winter.
Chapels and distinctive buildings
The TesaĹ™ovská Chapel is an octagonal Protestant prayer house dating from 1909. Its distinctive octagonal architecture makes it one of the area's most interesting religious buildings. The exterior is freely accessible year-round. You can visit the interior during events or by arrangement with the owner, the OchranovskĂ˝ sbor pĹ™i ÄŚeskobratrskĂ© cĂrkvi evangelickĂ© v TurnovÄ›. As event times and arrangements may change, it is advisable to check in advance whether a visit is possible.
The Maják Járy Cimrmana observation tower is a wooden structure and is directly accessible from the Cimrmanovy doby Museum. Together with Štěpánka, it adds another building to the area's cultural attractions; the information about Štěpánka also provides a specific route length and named viewpoints. This lets you choose between architecture, railway history, landscape views and activities in Jizerka according to your interests, without having to follow a fixed itinerary.
