Jenschowitz can be explored through two interconnected themes: the Church of St. George, the park by the church, and monuments from different centuries. This gives the town a particular appeal for anyone wishing to include sacred architecture and local history in their travel plans.
Church of St. George and Park
The Church of St. George stands on a hill above the town centre and is visible from afar. As a prominent architectural landmark, it provides a distinctive focal point in the townscape. It is also a Baroque church dating from 1744 and a protected cultural monument. Its location, visibility from a distance and architectural history come together in one place.
The park by the church was laid out in the 18th century after the church was completed and is registered as a significant landscape feature. The church and park are connected not only spatially, but also historically: the park was created after construction of the church was complete. Those interested in the relationship between architecture and designed landscapes will find a distinct perspective on local history here.
Jenschowitz also lies partly within the UNESCO Český ráj Geopark: its western edge extends into the municipality. This places the town within a wider landscape. This geographical connection adds a regional perspective to the local church and monument themes.
Churches and Monuments Through the Ages
The Sbor krále Jiřího z Poděbrad, also called Husův sbor, represents a different architectural chapter. This modern church building was constructed between 1927 and 1929 and is based on traditional architectural forms. In contrast with the Baroque Church of St. George, it reflects a different approach to inherited forms: a modern building is combined with a traditional foundation.
Individual monuments also broaden the perspective beyond the church buildings. The Marian Column in Jenschowitz is a state-protected monument. Karel Dostrašil, a burgrave in Rohozec, had it erected in 1719. Its great age and its documented association with a named burgrave give the column a distinctive place in local monument history.
There is also a statue of St. Anthony of Padua on a tall plinth in front of a church in Jenschowitz. It dates from 1808 and is associated with the merchant Jiřík Nejedly. Smaller monuments thus add further names, forms and dates to the history of the churches. The column and statue can be considered as subjects in their own right, rather than being treated as part of the churches’ architectural history.
A Focus for Your Stay
When planning your visit, you can compare the different periods and architectural styles. The Marian Column dates from the early 18th century, the Church of St. George from 1744, the statue of St. Anthony from 1808, and the Husův sbor from the late 1920s. This sequence makes the monuments more than a simple list: it shows how sacred buildings and memorials have taken different forms over the centuries. Together with the park and the town’s share of the Geopark, they connect Jenschowitz’s local history with the surrounding regional landscape.
